Submitted by velouriia t3_yrqsn5 in springfieldMO

I found out a few weeks ago I got into the LPN program at OTC. So far, I’ve gotten the info about documents to submit and so on. Has anyone else been thru it & know the process going forward? I’m waiting to see when I can register & what section I’m in. I’m also going to be thru Mercy and want to know if they test for nicotine. I don’t know anyone who’s been in the program so I wanted to turn to y’all & see if anyone knows the process.

Congratulations!! May I ask how old you are? I've thought about going thru their program but I'm 42 and I worry that I'd be the oldest student there.

You are never too old to go back to school. When I went to otc I attended classes with all ages! Do it!!!

You are not too old! I graduated from nursing school at 41 and while most other students were younger, I was not the oldest.

I went to school with a dude who was 60 going for his nursing degree, your never too old and NO ONE will shame you. I'd say a third of my class was your age when I went.

OTC is great because everyone going there is all ages. Don't let that stop you! What matters is not the age, what matters is you go. You will be on the same playing field as everyone because you will all be starting out at the beginning.

Even MSU and Drury has those transfer students so they also still have a mix of ages. Just go chase your dream!

Find the student navigator for the nursing program and contact them. I'm in the Robotics program at OTC and my student navigator has been able to consolidate almost all of that stuff into a scheduled visit with her.

It's honestly been way easier and less stressful than trying to figure it out on my own. I'll see if I can find that contact info.

Congrats! Yes, you should have an assigned navigator that can assist you with everything! If you log into your MyOTC you can find their contact information there.

No nic test for Mercy. You will have an orientation day before classes actually begin. Just get all your paperwork submitted and they will guide you through the rest; check your OTC email frequently.

Cox does test for nicotine when you’re a new hire so I’d assume mercy would be the same

If you run into any issues throughout the process you can always contact he IT Student Help Desk. They can at least point you in the right direction of who you may need to speak to.

I work at mercy and besides the onboarding drug test, I don’t believe they test for nicotine. I think it’s just more of a pledge to not smoke it on the grounds or smell like it when you come to work. I know nurses that vape nicotine and even some that smoke cigarettes. Just not at work or near work. 👍🏼 I know when you apply for benefits it’ll be in your benefit questions on if you smoke cause they offer programs to help quit lol. I know you’re going through OTCs LPN program, I’m a tech at mercy and want to do my pre reqs at otc so I can do nursing too!! I applied but have not enrolled in any classes for spring yet tho. I hope you love mercy as much as me! I had a good experience that has helped me make sure nursing is what I want.

Don’t be late for class. They hate that and unless they’ve changed things drastically you get one chance and then you‘re out. There are people on the waiting list who will show up on time.
