I want to donate to them, but just the fact they couldn't be bothered to have insurance on their old trailer when such a thing is really inexpensive bothers me.
My work just ran an event over Black Friday for animal shelters, raising about $15k. We already gave a chunk of that to Rescue One, but I don't know what we should do with the rest. We have about 10k left for donations, but I want to ensure it's used responsibly. I asked about it on FB, and they hid/deleted my post instead of replying back to me Thoughts or suggestions?

Watching Over Whiskers is a no kill shelter and a 501(c)3 charity with oversight from Community Foundations of the Ozarks. Solid place to put any amount of that money.

Eden Animal Haven in Brighton is another good one. They are the only no kill and cage free shelter in SW Missouri. I just adopted my cat from there and they obviously love and care for all the kitties. It's such a cool setup. They have like 8 rooms and each room has an enclosed patio that the cats can go outside as well. Highly recommend you check them out

25k bond? That's it?
Need to start making examples of these people and stop excusing that they are "poor" and their social circumstances and their "mental health". The excuses have to stop being accepted. It's time for accountability.
Plenty of people in the same position who don't do anything like this.
Spiffy_Dude t1_iyt4dcx wrote
The greatest correlation to poverty is crime. It’s pervasive and generational. If we want to reduce crime we need to alleviate poverty first. There is a reason that Springfield is on the list of most dangerous cities per capita and also Missouri’s poorest city based on household income (cities with >25k residents)
armenia4ever t1_iytgj80 wrote
Correlation doesn't equal causation.
It's definitely an important factor, but there are so many poor people and communities throughout the world that don't rob their neighborhoods blind because there are either severe consequences for doing so or they are part of a high trust society. (Think Denmark, Finland, Norway, Japan, etc.)
Literally, all the generational wealth and property built up over a century on my mothers side was wiped out in a few weeks in just one genocide. We don't get any of the usual sympathy either with charities, grants, scholarships, etc just for Armenians like specific other marginalized communities have here.
Are we stealing left and right from our neighbors because we are poor? No.
Yes being poor limits our options as it does mine everyday, but if you cant trust your neighbors or people in your community, it eventually breaks down beyond repair.
Poverty will never be entirely eliminated, hence strong robust social safety nets in places like Denmark, but those are places that are high trust because they have centuries of people living there with the same morals and values.
Danes trust their fellow Danes would never take advantage of the system. Us? We literally have 100s of billions of fraud during the pandemic loans and bailouts again that allowed major corps to buy their stock back instead of putting into the workers. (The bond across society is broken.)
We don't have what countries like Denmark do and probably won't for another 100 years and with Americans having less and less in common based on geography its gonna get worse.

I can't help but imagine 25k exceeded the value of money they would have got as scrap. I also somehow doubt people scrapping can pay 25k

Sad people gotta do that. Is crime really bad there in Springfield? My family and I were possibly thinking on moving there next summer.
HigherSomething t1_iys77ie wrote
Mostly property damage/theft if I'm not mistaken. Catalytic converter theft is very prominent.
Robodie t1_iyskezc wrote
I would recommend considering other locations. Crime rate is ridiculous - doesn't matter whether it's a "bad" neighborhood or a "good" one. If it's not nailed down, it's gone. If it IS nailed down, then the bottom half might still be there and the top will probably be one block over.
Suburbs are only marginally better.
Hate talking smack about a place I spent most of my adult life, but it's pretty much a lost cause. Someone burned my house to the ground a couple of years ago, so that's kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. Imagine that.
Born2fayl t1_iyw5y6j wrote
I don’t know you, so it’s hard to know what you’d be a likely victim of. Springfield isn’t that bad. It’s not 1970’s NYC. Theft is bad, but it’s getting bad everywhere. Homelessness is bad, but it’s getting bad everywhere. I’d be careful walking around at night, but…I’d be careful anywhere.
I guess if you’re a boring, middle class, moral panic type, Ozark or Nixa would be better, though I cannot personally imagine living anywhere that boring and chain store. Springfield is boring and small enough. I love in the MSU area and as long as you’re safe you’re probably going to be fine.
GinWithJennifer t1_iyveebg wrote
Catalytic converter theft seems so common that maybe 1 in 7 people I met seem to have been a victim of it at least once.
I'd say for the most part tho junkies won't really bother you. You see some that look like they're having a tough time but otherwise leave people alone but then you see some stuff like this every once in a while. Springfield is relatively nice compared to KC though so 🤷🏻♀️
MadMageMC t1_iysd0g9 wrote
If you have to come to this area, it's better to live in Ozark, Nixa, Republic, or one of the other towns around Spfd rather than in Spfd itself.

MadMageMC t1_iywfyp6 wrote
I guess that depends on the town. I liked Republic. It had enough amenities to get what I needed, and if I wanted something more, Spfd was only 30 minutes up the road.
GinWithJennifer t1_iyvenp4 wrote
Rogersville and Strafford are also kind of nice
Numerous-Mix-9775 t1_iysf4yf wrote

internationalkoala00 t1_iysidrl wrote
Yes. Just Google the crime / murder rate.
Aimless78 t1_iyskqqz wrote
But yet that stat can be deceiving considering it is based on reported crime and not actual crimes. If the people don't trust the police department or that the police department will investigate it and prosecute it then people don't report the crimes. In a place where people have trust in the police department and the courts you have a higher percentage of crimes reported. So, even though it is a stat that can be compared you also have to read between the lines to see if it is accurate or if it is people under reporting crimes.
