Driving around in bad weather with little to no tread on your tires is not only unsafe to oneself but to others that could also potentially be injured if you cause a wreck.

Cloud_Disconnected t1_j5psahy wrote

That is absolutely true.

It's also true that sometimes people without means are put in a position of having to choose between a bad option and a worse option.

A) Drive to work on bad tires in the snow and put themselves and others at risk.

B) Stay home, lose their job, lose their home, sleep on public land, go to jail.

C) Stay home, lose their job, steal catalytic converters to pay rent.

D) ride the bus

E) have coworker/employer/friend/family pick you up

F) Uber/lyft/taxi

Snows here don’t last long at all, so none of these would likely be used more than once.

If you live and work near a bus route, and if it runs at the times you need.

> E) have coworker/employer/friend/family pick you up

If they are available.

> F) Uber/lyft/taxi

If you can afford it.

Just like telling people how to live their lives when you don't know their circumstances.

Fuselol t1_j5r6xoo wrote

Who’s telling someone how to live their lives? People have options and freedom to do what they want. You gave 3 options where one is unsafe, one involved jail time, and one involved a life of theft. Empowerment am I right? There’s better options than that what you’re providing.

Being poor reduces your options, and often the options you have left all suck.

> There’s better options than that what you’re providing.

Of course. I wasn't trying to provide an exhaustive list of all the available options, I was making the point that sometimes people don't have better options.

12

Fuselol t1_j5re52b wrote

Being poor reduces your options, yes. Making excuses isn’t an option when you’re that limited.

From the exhaustive list you could have made you pointed out the least viable/productive, makes sense. You’re the voice of doubt that no one needs in their life. Good luck to anyone around you.

Yes. I assumed that the reader would take the examples you gave as implicit and not viable for the reasons I later explained. This credit I extended to the reader was clearly not warranted in all cases, as you have shown.

And good luck to you, should you ever find yourself in adverse circumstances. I hope those around you will show more understanding and compassion to you than you seem to show to others in the case that you might have to make the sort of difficult decisions many people face every day.

Fuselol t1_j5s18ss wrote

I was in said circumstances for the majority of my life. It’s how I’ve formed my opinions.

Cloud_Disconnected t1_j5s68uo wrote

As was I. I try to treat people the way I wish I had been treated. That's not to say you don't. For all I know you responded to the bootstraps mentality favorably, and so that's what you believe is helpful to other people.

Don't think that I'm saying that people aren't accountable for their choices. If someone can make a better choice, they should. But sometimes they can't.

True but not everyone has the option. I am blessed enough that I have good tires but I have slid my way into work becuase it was mandatory many times

There's a difference between poor or rich and safe or unsafe. Unsafe driving is just that. Safety doesn't care about your socioeconomic status... Don't drive unsafe.

suchawildflower t1_j5qf4w2 wrote

Well if that was a super privileged response....some people have no choice. That's where the socio-economic status comes into play...when you have to make hard choices, like have money to live, or not work.

hystericallymad t1_j5ql48r wrote

By no means am I saying hard decisions aren't made. I'm saying safety doesn't care. If you drive unsafe you put others at risk, not just yourself.

Honestly...

Just slow down. Really. Don't try to make a yellow light. Give yourself plenty of time to stop. Go as slow as you need to.

Me and the fam are initially from Wisconsin and Illinois so we are used to driving in snow and as long as you slow down, you usually will be fine. Just be on the lookout for black ice.

I’ve got a medical appointment tomorrow morning. I’m sure they’ll cancel school so my preschooler and toddler will be with me. I’m dreading the drive already. My tires are good and I’m a good driver, but I’ve got a minivan. Just hoping the roads are cleared enough to go fast enough to not be an obstacle, slow enough not to slip off the road.

That’s my plan. Unfortunately, my appointment is for 9, and it’s allergy-related so I’ve been off my allergy meds and have had a sinus headache the past week. If I reschedule, I’ll have to do it again - but if it’s looking bad, I will 100% reschedule and suffer through this for a week than take the chance of anything happening to my kids.

PalPubPull t1_j5q46pg wrote

Are you able to do a virtual appointment? I know certain medications can't be prescribed via virtual visit, but wondering if an allergy medication would?

Numerous-Mix-9775 t1_j5qa05e wrote

Nope, this was actual getting-needles-stuck-in-my-arm allergy testing. I’ve got it rescheduled for a couple weeks out. Bit annoyed I’ll have another week of being miserable but I’ll happily take that over an accident.

Renn_1996 t1_j5pui9s wrote

Just reschedule. Its not worth the risk of you your kids or anyone else. If we would all just decide to do what is advised and stay home more businesses would likely decide to close and stop forcing people to put themselves in dangerous positions.

Numerous-Mix-9775 t1_j5pw7yy wrote

I actually just called to reschedule. I can’t see the future so I’ll take the risk of being miserable for longer than harming a hair on my kids’ heads.

Renn_1996 t1_j5pu3qb wrote

Seconded, I have seen too many people who aren't from around here try to drive out on "snow" not realizing it just a dusting covering the layer of ice.

Just don't go out. If professional bus drivers are not out driving because schools are closed your ass should be home. If you go out you are not only risking your life but anyone who MUST be out on roads such as emergency responders and MODOT.

Edit* also if you are from here and go out, don't be an overconfident ass that tailgates people.

Also a reminder that AWD/4WD does not help you stop. Tires and only tires make the difference there (functioning brakes are a given). Tires are the single point(s) of contact with the ground. If you have summer tires, even new ones, the rubber compound turns them into hockey pucks below 40 degrees because they're designed for hot temperatures. Proper cold-weather tires maintain pliability and grip in cold weather, and they have special tread patterns that siphon snow out of the tire tread.

Even all-seasons are just okay - I slid off the highway in Minnesota one time while driving on the best rated all-seasons I could find.

Be smart and slow down.

7

Demmetros t1_j5qh70v wrote

Brakes matter too. If your brakes are near shot, they give out, tires keep rolling.

2

midijunky t1_j5rcknx wrote

Ehhh... Maybe while braking, tires do trump all in that case. But AWD/4WD does help you stop in some circumstances. You don't want to brake sometimes if the roads are *that* bad.

If you let off the gas in a 2wd car and let your engine take some load, vs. letting off the gas in an AWD car, you've got more friction on the ground because of the fact that you've got all 4 tires doing some engine braking. 2 points of contact > 4 points of contact. Combine both and that's idea.

Honestly though, I think OP's main point was "Hey, you in the 4wd mall crawler dually diesel with a 20" lift, don't be a dick and help someone out if you see someone that needs it"

Also, find a parking lot and practice turning out of slides. It's great practice with low consequences that may save your life on the interstate one day.
