Hmmm. Gene modification in mammals, birds, and marsupials could learn enough to modify humans too...

Also, why are they so quick to take on another project when the first two seem to be years away from anything actually viable? Kinda seems like a publicity stunt and cash grab.

We are pretty far from something like that due to ethics. It may happen in china or something far away but ethics committee for things like that are pretty serious

Well, it’s hard to do anything without cash, and it’s hard to get cash if no one knows about you.

That’s why like, Tesla announced pre-order for the cyber truck—to gauge interest, get some cash in hand, and to build more interest.

Obviously this isn’t open for pre-orders, but good publicity draws in more investors.

Why not? I hear Dodos are very friendly (possibly good with kids), and failing that, also delicious.

marsupials are mammals, by the way (and so are humans).

Pretty sure the company behind this only have a few desks in a WeWork office in Austin, though I could be wrong.

They seem a long long way off from from having any sort of concrete evidence that they can actually do this.

HolyPommeDeTerre t1_j6uedlq wrote

I don't see that as a bad thing I guess unless Austin is some pretty big lab city.

From the article, most of the work is about lab and gene edition. So most of the money should go into that mainly.

I do this all the time; start a new project/hobby after finishing about 60% of my previous project/hobby.

One thing that someone will try on humans is this: doubling neuron density.

Birds have double the nerve density of mammals, allowing them to pack a ton of brainpower into small craniums. Figure out how they do that, stick it in people

Well the dodo went extinct because it was so tasty. I feel like that is a really good reason to bring it back.

Apparently the meat is revolting, and even inedible.

Thats what they want you to think.

"No, don't even try to taste it, it's disgusting. Just leave it to me, I don't deserve no better."

Bobozett t1_j6t5vkt wrote

Exactly. Apparently it was the rats on board Dutch ships who feasted on Dodo eggs which lead to their extinction.

limpchimpblimp t1_j70kky9 wrote

It was more likely the introduction of pigs and macaques than rats.

Oh good. I hear they were tasty, so hopefully I can try them soon!

Where did you hear that? One of the few things we DO know about the Dodo was that it tasted bad.

3

limpchimpblimp t1_j70kp89 wrote

I would think a big pigeon would taste like squab. Plus I’ve heard the Dutch can be fussy eaters.

Man we can barely handle the current viruses raging on in birds that aren’t extinct, why on earth are we gonna bring new birds into the mix?

You wanna go mammoth hunting or dodo hunting? It’s not gonna be a question. Mammoth hunting rifles will be developed as soon as one is born.

2

anlumo t1_j6roksf wrote

IIRC the reason dodos are extinct is that it was easy to just walk up to them and kill them. That’s no fun for hunting.

SuperbHuman t1_j6rwzgk wrote

Depends by how good of a hunter you are

Could be like a family theme park where five year olds get to hunt birds and kill them.

Ask scientists how many current species will go extinct between now and the rebirth of the dodo? And did we learn nothing from Ice Age? The dodos will just compete with us to consume. They were the ones that ended the melons.

If they do make sure vitromeat tech is included so we can eat all the Dodo we want without having to kill them, again.

He replied: what do you think happened to the dodo.

Ok but maybe we find out that Dodo's were actually super racist and thats what got them killed and then we're stuck with a population of incredibly racist birds we're afraid to make extinct again. Scientists just don't think about the consequences do they.
