Yeah. No shit. I asked for a recipe and it tasted awful. But it was pretty confident about it.

But it was great at generating 12 paragraphs of background filler about how it happened upon this delightful recipe while rock climbing in a made-up country.

Turns out natural language models are great at generating natural language.

Not sure whether this is just a joke but it's totally believable and hilarious either way. The Internet is so full of recipes that want to tell you 6 pages about abuela in the old country before a crappy guacamole recipe they copied from the food channel.

This is exactly what's going to proliferate if learning/mimicking models keep gaining popularity. I'll be a downward spiral of copypasta. The more of this stuff that gets posted as original content, the worse it'll become as other ones copy it.

AIs are basically being designed to hack our brains by using "right-sounding" language to bypass our BS detectors with unearned confidence. This is what con-men do. We're building AI to con us at scale.

Here's my exchange with ChatGPT just now:

Me: >Give me a good brunch recipe

Chat: >Sure! Here's a delicious and easy brunch recipe for you to try:
Avocado Toast with Poached Egg and Smoked Salmon
Ingredients:
2 slices of whole wheat bread
1 ripe avocado
1 lemon
Salt and pepper
2 large eggs
2 slices of smoked salmon
Fresh dill, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Start by toasting the bread until crispy.
While the bread is toasting, cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh into a small bowl. Mash the avocado with a fork and add a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper.
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and add a tablespoon of vinegar to the water.
Crack each egg into a separate small bowl. Create a whirlpool in the simmering water by stirring the water in a circular motion with a spoon. Gently pour each egg into the center of the whirlpool, one at a time. Cook the eggs for about 3-4 minutes or until the whites are set and the yolks are still runny.
While the eggs are poaching, spread the avocado mixture evenly onto each slice of toast. Top each slice with a slice of smoked salmon.
Using a slotted spoon, remove the poached eggs from the water and place them on top of the smoked salmon.
Garnish with fresh dill, if desired, and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious and nutritious brunch!

Perfectly acceptable recipe - nothing stands out as weird, and no filler. The timing of the steps might be a bit off.

So the question is - what prompt did you give it to get your result?

What, you think that doesn't look like a narwhal? Have you ever even seen a narwhat? No? Then why not trust ChatGPT who has the knowledge of the entire internet at its (virtual) fingertips. I for one trust our emergent AI overlords.
