The breakthrough is 14nm. Not validated yet and will probably take several years to get there. So only 10+ years behind.

Huawei's success is the 14nm EDA design software.

At present, this kind of software is controlled by the United States, which means that China is gradually breaking through the complete industrial chain of chips, from materials, equipment to software. Not long ago, Japan dismantled Huawei's small base stations and found that Huawei had replaced most of the American chips with Chinese domestic chips.

Good. Then they won’t need Taiwan.

Claiming Taiwan has nothing to do with the CHIPS. China's stance on Taiwan never changes since 1949, before Integrated Chips were patented by Texas Instruments in 1958.

Having worked both at TI and in the chip industry I can say with confidence that Chinas interests in Taiwan have changed significantly since Taiwan started making microprocessors. China wants the money more than the traditional ownership.

If chips where oil, Taiwan would be Iraq the the American empire.

But you cant drill for chips. You need the infrastructure intact and people to like you enough to do high level work for you.

All you need is to secure supplies, by either asking or taking.

MotorballPlayer99 t1_jefaa0l wrote

The supplies require specialized machinery and skills not easy to replicate.

So your telling me that the USA really care about the people of Taiwan.

Wasn't Huawei the super evil company that tried to steal or spy on everybody?

"Tried" was the only wrong word here. Nortel networks Canada. It is all denied of course, china does nothing wrong and is a fair market player.

The company that people said was spying and stealing yet no one provided any actual good evidence for.

You mean harmony OS? The one that's still just a renamed copy paste of android? And was supposed to be released last year and still isn't on phones? That one?

Huawei's mobile phones and TVs have used Hongmeng OS for several years

14nm is about 10 years behind current gen.

When the Soviet Union started producing their own silicon they were about 10 years behind as well, starting with technology acquired from the West , but that distance grew as western companies outpaced the Soviet ability to copy what the west had already done and acquire new technology in efforts to catch up.

Question is whether the Chinese can invent their own smaller nodes entirely domestically. Only then is there any hope at all that they'll ever be competitive.

They’re already building in India, so that’s a maturity/scaling issue.
