Let's face it, it's a net negative no matter how you try to frame it.

I think social media is good, but monetization of it is not. Just compare Usenet and IRC to Reddit and Discord.

As somebody addicted to the internet. No. It’s not good. And I don’t think any teenagers should have access to it period.

Just look at what a cesspool r/teenagers is.

It is good as long as it is run by the people using it, with open software and good moderation.

It' not good in any shape and form, and moderation is dictatorship.

If you do not like the mods, you can go somewhere else. That is the joy of the 1rst amendment. Ahhhh, isnt freedom nice?

Uh, no. None of the discord moderators are properly vetted or trained to babysit teenagers all day.

Especially hormonal/suicidal teenagers in discord servers.

Enter IRC. You could run your own IRC if you do not like discord, and moderate it yourself.

So you’re telling me,

People should be allowed to run mental health servers. Where they are not vetted or trained. And anonymous.

While moderating a bunch of suicidal ideation kids who are also anonymous, where they have no actual capable ability to actually support?

And do all that for free?

I did not read the mental health part.

Even so, you could enlist the help of a mental health professional to help.

Not saying Reddit is bad, just that it pushes political content and other things to keep you hooked.

Would #metoo and #blacklivesmatter and LGTBQ+ movements have been as powerful (or existed) without social media? Political dissent and protests? Don’t forget Obama’s election in 2008 had a large social media factor (just like politics today, regardless of one’s political leanings)

Sometimes the hard line stance that social media is bad feels like throwing the baby out with the bath water.
