They will think say that if they are taught that

No!

They should learn crowdsourcing, collaboration, and networking the old-fashioned way--being born to a wealthy enough family to hire intermediaries who handle all this stuff.

We can't have the hoi polloi talking to each other and thinking this is a good thing. There must be some immigrants or something we can blame for this... this... this cavalier attitude toward conversation.

I blame Motley Crue's attempts to play trap music... and millennials.

It's all their all faults.

> lots of people rely on the reporting around the Frances Haugen leaks from inside Facebook to argue that “Facebook knew” that Instagram causes “body image issues” for children (and then most people leapt to the belief that the company then ignored and downplayed that finding). But, as we noted, the actual study told a very, very different story. As we pointed out at the time, the study was an attempt to do the right thing and understand if social media like Facebook was actually causing negative self-images among teenagers, and the study found that for the most part, the answer was absolutely not.

Very good read. Not something you’d want to form a strong opinion on without reading it first <gestures broadly at Reddit>

Let's face it, it's a net negative no matter how you try to frame it.

Idk, I think a lot of the complaints about social media is that its replace normal social interaction and increased siloing. Social media can be useful socially when evaluated in a vacuum, for example if you live in the middle of nowhere in rural Alaska social media is probably helpful. But it shouldn't be treated as a replacement for actual social contact, I think one of the bigger issues is the teens and children lack social outlets and become heavily reliant on social media for their main socialization. The point being getting rid or limiting of social media for young people isn't the main answer its should be more focused on providing options to replace or supplement the socialization factor social media provides.

Ever since I booted up halo 2 on the original Xbox in 2004 and got called a racial slur by someone in Connecticut I have loved how connected the internet makes us as people.

As somebody addicted to the internet. No. It’s not good. And I don’t think any teenagers should have access to it period.

Just look at what a cesspool r/teenagers is.

Uh, no. None of the discord moderators are properly vetted or trained to babysit teenagers all day.

Especially hormonal/suicidal teenagers in discord servers.

So you’re telling me,

People should be allowed to run mental health servers. Where they are not vetted or trained. And anonymous.

While moderating a bunch of suicidal ideation kids who are also anonymous, where they have no actual capable ability to actually support?

And do all that for free?

Would #metoo and #blacklivesmatter and LGTBQ+ movements have been as powerful (or existed) without social media? Political dissent and protests? Don’t forget Obama’s election in 2008 had a large social media factor (just like politics today, regardless of one’s political leanings)

Sometimes the hard line stance that social media is bad feels like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

More to the point would be who gets to control the narrative when the people converse, versus what they're told to believe by those who have been telling the same story since before the interwebs existed.
