There’s a button that says “magic avatars” and that’s what people are using. The regular app is just like a facetune thing. Took me a while to figure it out too.

Why do my magic avatars look really crappy tho? They're just my selfies but with a bit of an artsy filter and not the whole image like with cool background? Is it the source photos themselves that are the problem?

All of mine look cool, I don’t know what happened for you. Are you sure you’re not just using the filters on the app??
