Edit well fuck, it's been canceled, could be a second season but it's up in the air

>A sophisticated treatise on consciousness and mortality, this absorbing mind-bender earns its own place in the pantheon of exemplary animated television.

The animation reminds me of Invincible, same with the performances. There are some interesting questions in here about AI slavery and uploaded intelligences.

Wouldn't want to give away more but if you like animation that is mature and well-written it's worth a watch.

Also: one of William Hurt's last performances before he died.

Legitimately one of the best sci-fi shows of the past decade, animated or not. I absolutely adore the show, and it really deserves a bigger audience.

Still holding out hope that the second season, which has already been fully produced and 100% completed with animation, voiceacting, and editing, still gets a release somehow. Maybe picked up by another studio or streaming service.

This story repeats too often. One season, gets canceled, everybody hopes that it will get picked up by a different service.

Seaborgium t1_j9zk5gv wrote

Yeah, but this is a bit different from most. The season is literally completed. It could be aired immediately. There is no further production that needs to be done unless they wanted to make another season. I'd be stoked about that, but I at least hope someone buys the rights to air season 2.

APiousCultist t1_ja3zv01 wrote

They'd need to buy the rights for S1 too, sounds like it was a write-off though. So unless someone manages to sneak S2 into a torrent, it'll never be seen. sigh I really love 2023 TV/film culture where completed good content just gets yeeted into the void by executives who are just beginning to realise people don't want to subscribe to 23 streaming services at once.

great show, insane that the canceled what was supposedly a completed 2nd season

esran7 t1_ja1tv9p wrote

It should be basically impossible to not release completed works like these unless it's such dogshit that it hurts the IP or company reputation.

Something is seriously wrong right now.

Amazing show that aired on a streaming service not a damn person uses. It even got a season 2 order but AMC was like "jk lol".

Second season is actually completed.

For being a small player in streaming and needing to curry favor, AMC+ certainly seems intent on telling its viewers to go fuck themselves.

11

skellener t1_ja111c3 wrote

In animation that’s no easy feat either. It’s a lot of fucking work. And they shelved it like that. 🤦‍♂️

archlector t1_j9zfy0d wrote

It was very good, till the ending episodes where it became a lame anime fight for no damn reason and ignored any attempt at thematic coherence.

I didn't know it had been canceled so I'm debating whether I'm going to continue watching it or not

Why did you make this thread then, lol?

I would still recommend it; but obviously it has lots of open plot points so it depends on your tolerance for that.

Your question is answered in the first three words of the comment up above

I stopped after episode two, honestly. With no second season, the girl getting her dad back seems like as good a place to leave it as any.

The most fucked up thing about canceled session 2 is that it's allegedly completely finished and paid for.

Makes me think somebody canceled it for the tax write off like they did with Batgirl

was one of a number of shows that AMC canceled for a tax write off.

> The series has been canceled after one season, despite a two-season order, and pulled from AMC’s streaming service as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive. The second season, which had been produced, will not air.

> Pantheon joins shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Moonhaven, which were all axed as part of a one-time tax write-down at the end of last year.

it just sucks that the first season was removed from the streaming service making it basically non existent.

Still mad as hell that it got canceled

huge fan of this show. One of the best I watched last year.

The music was also very on point.

I remember seeing promos for it and being pretty interested in how it was going to play out, and then I find out that it had 8 episodes released already and there were hardly any talks about it. No mentions, and even on dedicated subreddits and forums, it didn't have much active chats.

Yeah, I liked what I saw of it, but they yanked it off AMC plus before I could finish it.

AMC+ should just rename itself "Don't get attached to this show+". After they renewed but then unrenewed Moonhaven I am not ready to be hurt again.

Interesting side trivia about Pantheon: I believe the main writer also is responsible for one of the major translations of The Three Body Problem.

The app aired some critical episodes out of order and totally ruined one of the best plot points in the series. Man that pissed me off.

Definitely one of the best animated shows out there. I really hope for a new season of it because there's alot to unfold from.

Edit: so it's true that it was cancelled after season two was already completed. It sucks that an amazing show like this gets canned after one season.

aridcool t1_ja2picu wrote

It probably won't quite scratch the same itch and is much less thoughtful but if you have Disney+ and need something else after Pantheon, you could do worse than watching Tron Uprising. Good voice acting cast, distinctive art style, and a sound track that is working with the same musical themes as the movie.

ryhaltswhiskey OP t1_ja421zu wrote

I think my new rule is "no 2nd season aired? ok then no first season" because I really liked the first episode of Kindred and the same thing happened. Same for 1899. 3 shows in the past 3 months that I liked that aren't gonna continue.

2

ryhaltswhiskey OP t1_ja49dxe wrote

According to the wiki: "The show was not renewed at the end of the season, but no official cancellation announcement was made by Disney."

So it's also in limbo.

aridcool t1_ja4a2qc wrote

Oh I think the ship has sailed on it by now. Our best hope is a future Tron movie might happen. It sounds like Jared Leto is involved which has some baggage I suppose but could still work out.

well wow you've nearly killed my interest with the first half of the first sentence. lol.

Animation is expensive. I'm not going to quibble with producers using a sparse animation style, because I know that a sparse animation style saves them money and it gets me more animated shows. At the end of the day streaming media is about profit.
