No

I really like the show, it has some all time great episodes. But I honestly have no idea where the mythical level of hype has come from.

I mean, we will see how the season pans out, but I wouldn’t necessarily even put succession in a Mount Rushmore of shows that have been aired this year

I still consider it must see tv, but it’s pretty much on par with something like white lotus or severance in my mind

Maybe. Need to see if they stick the landing.

It absolutely is.

When it comes to pure technical quality - acting and writing is the best I've ever witnessed, including movies. Directing is unconventional but great. I think its only downside is the plot which can feel a little repetitive. But it's still peak television.

is this my sign to start watching? I’m just worried that im gonna get bored trying to get through the first couple of episodes since im not used to shows like this

Nah.

The Sopranos, The Wire, Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, Breaking Bad, Dead Wood, Mad Men, Game of Thrones and The Leftovers are all considerably better I would say.

Then again I wouldn't put BCS amongst the mount rushmore (especially after S6) and many on this sub would.

Ok? And I’d put those shows at the same level in my opinion (since this is a thread on individual opinions)

I’m allowed to really like the show without thinking it’s unequivocally the top 4 greatest shows of all time lol

Most definitely in the top 10 for me.

Probably contains the most imaginative dialogue that I’ve seen since the Sopranos and at its best, it’s like a slow moving train wreck that demands your full attention. Seriously, the writers treat board meetings as intensely as GoT treated dragon battle sequences and it’s all the better for it.

Is it even on the Mount Rushmore of HBO shows? The Sopranos, The Wire and Game of Thrones are no-brainers then there is a lot of great shows that you could consider for the 4th spot.

Way too early to tell. I think you need a good 8-10 for a series to settle before it can find its place in the medium's history.

But also none of this matters and it's entirely up to you, so you do you.

Hardly one of the 4 best shows ever on TV...

For sure,

Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad, Succession, The Sopranos makes for a good TV all time immemorial combo

Yes, it's absolutely silly to start anointing a show as one of the all time greats before it even ends.

Chataboutgames t1_je576w6 wrote

It being different mostly, IMO. Like it has a different feel to it and in the age of infinite versions of the same thing that goes a long way.

Also, nice mix of prestige quality and moment to moment laughs/entertainment. And that damn score.

The ending hasn't happened yet but I expect it to be rated as top 4 all time best reviewed show at the end of the day.

I hate this saying so much. The show's literally never been bad and it's not even that plot driven so what are the odds that a show with no missteps suddenly crashes upon landing? And on the infinitesimal chance that it is bad, I'm not sure that necessarily means everything that came before it is bad. Plus it feels like continuously saying this about every show just sets up crazy high expectations and makes you feel disappointed in the end.

Like sure it needs to all be good for the show to wind up on the Rushmore of shows but the "land the plane" line has become so trite to me.

It's hard to call any show a clear top 4 show. I will say, there are very few shows where I was this excited to watch a new episode every week.

The Wire, Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers are probably the fixtures on my top 4 list and there are a whole bunch that could be #4, and Succession is definitely one of them.

I think it'll depend on whether this final season ties everything together well. The show's already a bit disjointed.

laughland t1_je7h7yv wrote

Band of Brothers and Chernobyl are both mini-series…Succession is better than Deadwood and Game of Thrones simply because both those shows didn’t end well (Deadwood cancelled and GoT is GoT). You could definitely argue the other shows you listed are better though I wouldn’t say “considerably”, they’re all in the same ballpark
