With all of the old tv series coming back I really hope they bring back a version of the Firefly universe. Not a reboot, where they try to keep the same characters and recast them - the original cast were too good to replace. But with more stories from the same universe. How cool would it be to see River captain her own ship now seeking out the scum of the system, occasionally stopping planet side where Kaylee and Dr Simon are married and run ship and human repairs. Where Zoe is now president of her own planet fighting corruption, where Jayne is trying to turn a community of mudders he freed into bandits. Where Mal and Inara are fighting over custody of their kids while secretly wondering why they ever broke up. And where on the main console of Serenity still sits Wash's dinosaurs and Shepherds bible.

The original universe had so much promise, there could be a lot of new stories told while bringing back some of the originals occasionally. Even seeing where Saffron ended up would be great, or how many of the original contacts like Badger survived. There is endless potential out there in the black!

Why?

It's been 20 years. The bloom is off the rose with Whedon and he probably wouldn't be asked back. As NuTrek (among other shows) has shown us, revivals like this almost inevitably suck. And a reboot or universe won't have the magic of the show you loved, it'll just be a soulless cash in on a familiar property.

Be happy with the little there was. Treasure it. Because anything new will likely be a horrible mistake that doesn't add anything good, it just tarnishes the original.

And yet sometimes you find magic and diamonds in the soulless cash grabs.

Thats why.

To some extent, they did extend the universe. There is a couple of series of comics that tell detailed stories of the team before, during, and after the timeline shown on TV. Plus a few novels too.

But truthfully speaking, nothing holds a candle to an actual TV show.

It wasn’t a success, the fan base is too small to make it worth doing anything, and it’s been 20 years. The creator is unhireable.

You can't...no one does writing like Joss Wheaton and unfortunately he's been canceled. Will miss his comedy writing style.
