I love how Piper just ended up being the jumping off point to tell way more interesting stories about BIPOC women

Phoebe on charmed is hated? I watched the show when it aired, but have never engaged in online communities about it. That makes me sad, she was my favourite (but I never rewatched the show, so that's from my teenage perspective)

jdpm1991 OP t1_je8rhza wrote

A lot of Charmed fans think she mistreated and abused Cole when he returned in season 5 and a lot also hate Alyssa Milano cause of her being friends with Weinstein's wife.

A lot of Charmed fans prefer Prue and Shannen Doherty

Jerry Seinfeld.

I dunno if I'd go so far as to say hated, but he's prob the fan's least favorite of the main cast. He's really carried throughout the series by Elaine, George and Kramer.

Latter_Feeling2656 t1_je9x1vu wrote

How could anyone not like him? He's a wonderful, wonderful boy. Everybody likes him. It's impossible not to like him. Impossible!

wild_man_wizard t1_je8qpvq wrote

Hot take, but I'd have to agree. Usually when I'm not enjoying the show it's due to Jerry being Jerry.

Hwhat? why would anyone hate on phoebe from charmed for?

Also Schmoesby - himym

Nacknack26 t1_je8ycfr wrote

I'm confused as well. Haven't watched Charmed, since i was a teenager, but she was always my favorite character. Really surprised she gets hate.

Jack_Shaftoe21 t1_jeaao5c wrote

Some people got pissed that the usual "Bad boy get redeemed by the love of a good woman" storyline ended up with the bad boy being written out and this was somehow seen as Phoebe's fault.

1

jdpm1991 OP t1_je8rnym wrote

Fans who love Cole Turner and Prue hate Phoebe because she is basically the Farrah Fawcett of Charmed

−3

goatjugsoup t1_je8rx1w wrote

Can you explain what you mean because I don't get it

9

jdpm1991 OP t1_je8s1y0 wrote

She was the it girl of Charmed. Charmed was originally a vehicle for Shannen Doherty after being the "bad girl" from 90210 but Charmed turned into the Alyssa Milano show when Cole Turner was in season 3.

1

goatjugsoup t1_je8silv wrote

Huh... ok. I didn't really get that vibe from the show at all when I watched it, although googling why Prue was killed off does bring up some articles that suggest that might have been somewhat true

5

jdpm1991 OP t1_je8sm2y wrote

if you check out the subreddit for Charmed; Alyssa Milano & Phoebe Halliwell are public enemy number one.

Rose McGowan (Paige) hates Alyssa as well. but Shannen, Holly and Alyssa are on cordial terms now

smesch83 t1_je95cjt wrote

a lot of "relatable" teen boy main characters in 90s shows were this:

  • Brandon in "Beverly Hills, 90210"
  • Zack in "Saved by the Bell"
  • Cory in "Boy meets World".

that being said: I want to go back to this posting in a few days and count how many replies name women/female characters. in soap fandoms and in superhero fandoms, a LOT of the fans are very "she's a stupid cow, so irksome, kill her off!", and I think many people on reddit have that tendency, too.

11

jdpm1991 OP t1_je95pfx wrote

Does Lucas Scott from One Tree Hill count as this as well?

3

smesch83 t1_je96zqm wrote

I love this reply, because fans are arguing about this all the time, especially now that the female stars are doing their "Drama Queens" podcast: every week, people will comment "stop the Lucas slander! Lucas is not bad!"

the actor gives off horrible vibes to me and I never saw season 1: when I first saw Lucas in S2 and especially S3, I liked that he came from a poor background and I liked that he was into literature, so personally, I'm fine with him. but yes: I think he's on the same level as Rory from "Gilmore Girls", where a lot of people just say "Side characters? DUMP THIS SANCTIMONIOUS PERSON AND RUN!"

jdpm1991 OP t1_je977ax wrote

I mean Chad Michael Murray cheated on Sophia Bush with Paris Hilton when he and Paris filmed House of Wax together. He always gave me fuckboy vibes

While not hated, Michael on Arrested Development seems like one of the least popular characters. He is kind of the Jimmy G on the 49ers.

A lot of main characters in shonen are the least interesting characters in their shows, almost by definition.

A lot of them have no real character flaws, to the extent that other characters improve upon themselves just by being around them. Further, they often have special destinies and origins, making their accomplishments feel unearned.
