Despite the relentless negative posts on /r/television, everyone I've ever talked to about this show really enjoyed it. I personally thought it was the best Lord of the rings production since Rankin Bass' The Hobbit.

Watching this go from overwhelmingly upvoted to downvoted was a hell of a ride

Anecdotes are just anecdotes though. The only people I know in real life (i.e. not the internet) thought it was absolute rubbish. Whose anecdote is more likely to represent the larger cohort of viewers? I have no idea.

Some light comparative data from users on my Plex server to add to anecdotal data:

Rings of Power:

  • ~25 total episodes watched
  • only one user has watched every episode
  • next farthest along is episode 5

House of the Dragon:

  • ~150 total episodes watched
  • only one user didn't watch every episode
  • three users watched it 2+ times through

Not commenting on quality; I just found it interesting.

Sounds about right based on the almost universal positivity about the series.
