Ahhhh yes... don't we all just love it when I bad show gets good!

Tell Me Lies is centered around a toxic relationships with a fuckboy who was already damn near psychotic by the time we met him, and an impressionable freshman girl who didn't have much of a personality before she started college, ready to be shaped. Spoiler alert: She goes damn near psycho as well.

It might as well be about a lil' good dick driving basic bitches crazy, the series takes a while to get there though, in fact for most of the first half I found myself bored by the lame looking college parties and frequent sex scenes that are not as hot as the producers might think they are. I questioned the college setting here too, and wondered if a story like this, about girls passively going to war over some dick, wouldn't be more convincing within a high school setting, but no, by the end of it I really couldn't see this story taking place anywhere besides college. It's the perfect place between teen and adulthood, and emphasizes that these are characters who should have their shit together... not... having their shit together. If anything, it makes the situation even more ridiculous, which is exactly what the series goes for and pulls off quite well.

To reiterate, the relationship between the 2 main characters is chaotic, add their friends and mutuals into the mix, and we have a soap opera of cheating, lies, backstabbing and even a lil' murder mystery, and by the 6th episode, when our characters basically go fully psycho to get what they want, that's when Tell Me Lies becomes a car crash you can't take your eyes off of. It never feels fake or contrived though. Tell Me Lies never forgets to show us why these characters act the way they do, even if it may seem implausible to some viewers for someone to go this crazy over some good sex... but believe me I've witness it with my own eyes before (looking at how unattractive that fucker is too makes it all the more realistic lol). It's not perfect, it's long and visually bland for instance, the acting isn't great either, not to mention the fact that season 1 ends on quite the cliffhanger, but it is very entertaining.

I was a freshman in 2009, and appreciated all the Cingular cell phones and msn music player screens they showed throughout the show lol

They nailed the girls’ wardrobe details too, especially the lead’s. Specific pieces of Tiffany (or knockoff) jewelry, hollister jeans, uggs…cringed every time I saw something I wore or aspired to wear as a teen

really thought it was going to be a mini series and it should've been. and could've at least casted a hot guy as the lead to make it slightly bearable. idk if i'll be tuning into another season full of annoyingness or not

We enjoyed this show as well, but I can definitely agree with all of the criticisms above. I also agree that it’s like “Evil Normal People” for sure. I liked that they didn’t hold back on showing how toxic the relationships got and while they did show some of the reasons for why they were this way, they didn’t cop out and provide a happy, contrived ending.

I don’t think it should get a second season, though, as I can envision it just becoming a tired retread of everything we just saw. I like where they left it and given that it’s adapted from a book, perhaps it’s best to leave it at that. While the acting left something to be desired at times, I found the actor playing Stephen did a hell of a job with the character and often the suitable facial expressions from him really sold the character. That last look at her in the finale in the final moments was perfect to capture just how toxic he was as a person.

Didn’t expect to like this as much as I did when I first started it, but was worth the watch.
