One of the best written shows that I have the pleasure to have watched . From its compelling dialogue , to the astounding set and visuals, to the moving score , to the characters who were all enjoyable .
With a cast no less than iconic with amazing screen presence , it was truly a great run and the movie was a perfect conclusion to the story .
I highly recommend it as I enjoyed every minute of this masterpiece .

That said, I legit enjoyed both shows dialogue in general. Deadwood was eloquent as fuck, and profanity aside, I enjoyed the way Spartacus removed a lot of 'unnecessary' words and committed it for the show. Like Kevin's "“Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick” style from The Office.

My dad(60+) isn't into acting or any of that shit. He just digs old school westerns. We watched that together and I was super surprised a filthy pimp ended up being his favorite character..
I revisited this not too long ago and it still holds up tremendously. Brilliant show and I've always said that if it were released in today's streaming age, I think it would have been a massive hit.
Historical shows with high production values generally hold up really well. Look at Rome.
I honestly think Rome didn't hold up nearly as well as Deadwood. Largely because of scope limitations: so much of Roman history is the actual battles and conquests, and, obviously in that pre-GoT era, there just wasn't the budget and technology to accomplish that on screen (hence a lot of 'describing historic battles in retrospect'.
Would love to see Rome done today, though.

I watched both for the first time recently and I agree with you. Think that's partially due to Rome having some dodgy cgi and going for a more distant time period, I imagine most of the props used in Deadwood were readily available for instance
It was a pretty big hit when it was on. I don't think much would change now vs then. It was made for a more niche audience and would have stayed that way. The first season especially is much more of a western than the others and that is a pretty hard sell to a general audience for such a slow show. Deadwood is fantastic but its also a show where they go 2-4 episodes with almost nothing much actually happening, and in an ensemble show, in that time you only get a little bit of each storyline. Sure we have ensembles today, but this one was slow and wordy in a different way, Succession looks like rocket's pace in comparison

Its not at all like Black Sails. Deadwood is more like a Shakespeare history play in an old west mining town with a lot of exposition and slow pace. Black Sails is more like an action adventure in comparison.

I'm gonna disagree with the other guy, it reminded me a lot of black sails. Deadwood definitely has better writing but there's a lot of similarity in the characters imo. Maybe it's just the time period and accents
Yeah I agree. I think the streaming age could have potentially saved it from cancellation but by its very nature its audience was always going to be limited.

Arguably the best written show ever, in terms of dialogue. Only topped by The Sopranos.
In terms of dialogue this has to be better than sopranos simply because of the use of language. The sheer amount of words strung together to be coherent was amazing.
The Sopranos excelled at writing dialog that both demonstrated an amazing amount of substance and nuance in it's characters while constantly reminding the audience just how ludicrously dumb they all were. A genuinely difficult feat of balancing comedy and drama.

Sopranos dialogue sounded how real people speak. Not clever lines like many shows do.
I can see why you would say that, and I don’t sternly disagree, but The Sopranos is WAY more quotable which, for me, makes the difference.

I think that might have to do with popularity as well. Sopranos was 10x? More popular so seen by a lot more people. More people know sopranos than deadwood

Deadwood is the greatest work of art I've had the pleasure of watching. It is my all time favorite. I am glad you got to experience it

First two seasons were excellent but found the third sorely lacking. The movie was forgettable but was happy they made it to appease the Deadwood fanatics (who when they are into this show, are really, really into it). But Milch has always had issues closing shows out, not that it's easy by any stretch of the imagination.

It's the dialogue written in Iambic pentameter (think, shakespearean) that truly sets this show apart.
The greatest tv drama of all time imo. Still unmatched in its writing and in its characters who are both larger than life and painfully human.

It's the only show that when I rewatch and then finish season 3 I go back and start over and watch again back-to-back. The show is so incredibly good.

Was still great, but they should've murdered the shit out of Hearst. Always get a chuckle thinking about Dan being Warren in "There's Something About Mary".
It's near perfect, but the cancellation hampers it. The film works as an epilogue tot he show, but as ending it's kind of weak, lacking the bite of the original.
Season 3 is wonderful, but it also feels like half a season. Had it had maybe one more season, we would be talking about maybe top 3 shows of all time. As is, it's still one of the best shows with some of the best dialogue.
