In Canada the one major broadcaster has started overlaying their own advertising around the boards instead of displaying the ads sold to the various arenas in smaller chunks. Do they do this for the US broadcasts? Has arena board advertising been downgraded to only a local influencing source?

i don't think it's something i've noticed, but hockey is not exactly a popular sport in the US so would probably have more trouble selling that kind of advertising space

I’ve seen it done in highlights from US telecasts. I assume it’s an NHL thing, not a Sportsnet thing

It is done to U.S. hockey broadcasts and I find it very annoying.

Yes! I can tell you 100% that it’s done on Seattle’s broadcasts and I’m almost certain it’s done for every game. Early in the season the keying was AWFUL on the regional broadcasts. I feel like they’ve worked out most of the kinks… But it’s still pretty distracting when they have a moving ad play while the camera is moving.

Yes.. I used to work for a company that runs the advertisement boards in arenas and stadiums across the US. Every so often we'd hafta put up a green screen on the courtside or backstop advertisement boards so the national or regional networks (TNT, ESPN and ABC.. or the old Fox Sports Regional Nets) could overlay their national/local adverts over them. And this was 15 years ago. Currently in the states, the regional networks that show NBA basketball or baseball (like Bally Sports and Root Sports) also does this

It's been part of the Penguins and other teams I have watched on US TV.

I thought it was a NESN thing. Nope, it’s league-wide. And it’s making me dizzy.

I was watching the Capitals play yesterday and was just thinking the advertisements have gotten completely out of control. Between 7 eleven or capital one printed on the helmets, sports betting printed on the jerseys, advertisements on the glass, advertisements running around the boards. It’s distracting from the actual game and it’s a shame.
