Not sure I'd call Heartstopper an "under the radar" show

Very happy to see that HBO is giving Somebody Somewhere a second season. It’s richly deserved.

I would put This Foo or Reservation Dogs up there before Single Drubk Female

This is going to hurt. It was my favorite show of 2022 and no one saw it because it was on AMC. It’s a shame, I highly recommend it.

Heartstopper is one of the most popular shows of this year, far from being under the radar.

so glad that league of their own is on this list - it's fantastic.

some of these shows I wouldn't say are under the radar

Is reservation Dogs under the radar? Most of the critics I follow love it, I love it, my friends haven't heard of it, and I feel like lots of r/Television are bots/marketing.

I have no other real world connections to tv

Players was hilarious. Wish they could’ve kept their deal with Netflix so it could’ve had more exposure to mainstream audiences. For someone that knows nothing about eSports but enough about Sports documentaries, it was as pitch perfect as you’d expect from the creators of American Vandal.

Star Trek Prodigy should be on this list...way more original than the corny Lower Decks in my opinion.

I do not play League, I tried a decade ago, but Players was my favorite show this year. Main reason is that, and my impression is American Vandal did the same, Players is really about individuals who are trying to achieve greatness in their field and what drives them. It just happens to be about gamers.

Get attached just in time for them to get canceled!

Spy x Family does not belong on there. Every weeb on the planet won't shut up about the show XD. (For reference I call myself a weeb too so not dunking on anime/manga fans)

Ben Whishaw is great as always but the entire cast is amazing.

Great needle drops.

Also recommend looking up on YouTube actual NHS doctors commenting on show.

Watching this show before HotD did not do favors for HotD.

Players was great, much like American Vandal before it. I know almost nothing about League of Legends or the MOBA genre in general, but each episode had me more and more attached to the story and characters. It rides a fine line between being a satire of esports while also being sincere in how that kind of scene and community can appeal and mean something to the people who participate in it. Even how the assigned role of each player speaks to what kind of person they are.

Highly recommend giving it a chance.

Weird seeing Spy x Family and Heartstopper there since they were quite popular in 2022.

How tf is Spy x Family under the radar when it's arguably the top anime of the year alongside Chainsaw Man

This is missing Bust Down. The best comedy of the year easily

I was under the impression it wasnt but i just looked it up and Google says it is actually a shounen lol.

Despite its cool action scenes, I would definitely put this under comedy/romance though. It for sure isn't a Naruto/Bleach/Dbz type of shounen so it definitely wouldn't outright appeal to those who only watch those types of shows. Its fun and charming though so it has mass cross-appeal and a little something for every anime lover.

Loved Alaska Daily... It's like a dark, Northern Exposure mystery with really strong actors. If they cancel it I'm going to riot!

Girls5eva is so funny, highly recommended. It’s moving to Netflix for its third season for some reason, but does have one coming

Black Bird was decent. Good performances. Great to see Liotta on screen one last time.

A_Shitty_guitarist t1_j2fhnou wrote

That's cool. It wasn't on your radar. Like someone else said, and I got downvoted for responding to, it's an anime so it's under a lot of peoples radars for that reason alone. If you watch anime and are in any anime subs or groups I'd have a hard time believing you if you said you hadn't at least heard of it.

I mainly know the British shows and they’re fabulous. Starstruck is so nice to have a lead of color as the love interest. This is Going to Hurt is a very special and important show.

Somebody Somewhere is sweet. And I wish small towns were this progressive, they’re not.

I’d add “Sort Of,” a show from Canada available on HBOMax in the US. It’s about/starring/created by a non-binary child of Pakistani immigrants living in Toronto working as a nanny/occasional electrician. The second season is just as good as the first IMO, really funny writing and fantastic acting. I’d like to see it get mainstream attention like Kim’s Convenience or Schitt’s Creek - there’s been real gold coming out of Canadian TV lately.

Single Drunk Female was one of the biggest surprises for me this year. I expected something a conventional/ cheesy network comedy but it’s a lot more nuanced than that.

I have a few close family members and friends who struggled with substance abuse and I think the show does a great job of telling all sides of the story. It’s lighthearted but knows when to add some weight.

Very excited for the next season, but just this one season of the show satisfied pretty much all that I would have wanted to get out of it. Would absolutely recommend it.

I felt exactly the same way! I was surprised to see it get a second season because I never see anything about it on Reddit (r/SingleDrunkFemale exists, but is largely inactive). I thought Sofia Black-D’Elia and Ally Sheedy gave great performances!

i loved it - was hard not to binge in one day, but i managed to stretch it out over two.

i found the parallel storylines interesting, loved the acting, appreciated and dug the historically based stories of the black woman player and her family/town, was charmed by the friendship between max and clance, was drawn in and captivated by the lesbian love stories, and was by turns moved to tears and laughter. after enough time has passed, i'm sure i'll rewatch so i can experience it all fresh again.

Pantheon caught me by surprise. i usually avoid anything anime related like the plague(i blame the fans).
