Get Shorty and Barry

I like the Get Shorty show but Barry is the better show of the two. In fact I'd argue its better than the Get Shorty movie and book as well

Problem with the Get Shorty movie and book is...I just don't care about Chili Palmer. His motivation is just "I'm bored of being a mobster". It's a fun movie (Though the book is surprisingly kinda dull) but I can't feel myself to really care about the characters.

The Get Shorty show is better in that regard in, thanks to the elongated time, we get more in depth with each character, find out their backstories and motivations, and it gives us the chance to decide whether or not we want them to succeed.

However I'd say Barry is still better because it's a much more complex show; Barry's struggle to be a good person is more interesting than Miles' because the show keeps going back and forth on whether or not he should change, and whether or not the people around him are much better, while, in the Get Shorty show, its clear as day that Miles and Ron are good people stuck in bad situations. They're still likable characters but, while I root for them to succeed, I can't help but be more captured by Barry's story and run the gamut between wanting him to succeed and wanting him to get behind bars.

That’s true but to be fair they took each show in a very different direction. Mentalist is a drama first with some elements of comedy while Psych is the opposite. Plus Patrick Jane outright says he’s not a psychic while Shawn is the opposite.

19

bernbabybern13 t1_j2cxipy wrote

Eh. They’re pretty different. Psych is a comedy and The Mentalist is pretty dark. Also Shawn pretends to be psychic, whereas Patrick never does. I personally thought the mentalist was more interesting in terms of watching how Patrick’s brain works and the tricks he uses and how he thinks. Shawn’s is more just quick flashes of things and then he’ll make his claim etc.

On paper it looked that way. Sorkin was just coming off of West Wing and Tina Fey wasn’t a sure thing at this point. While she was on SNL and Mean Girls was a success, to the public she was just the Weekend Update anchor and Mean Girls was more associated with Lohan. This was her first thing where she was front and center. Without seeing either I would have thought Sunset Strip would be the one that survives.

Also heard from an ER doc that scrubs is the only medical show he’s ever seen that remotely resembles reality. Most medical shows have 1st-2nd year residents doing more exotic procedures in a month than real doctors see in a career.

I’ve heard that from many medical professionals! It’s because the creator and show runner (and I think head writer, but at least significant influence on writing. Also married to Jordan IRL and plays a janitor in the finale) Bill Lawrence has a good friend who’s a doctor. They were roommates in college, his name is JD. He’s now the chief of medicine at his hospital. I think he and maybe other medical professionals were pretty routinely consulted to make sure it was accurate, both in terms of illnesses and medicine and also general dynamics.

Edit: you may already know that, but I’m just adding it in case others don’t!

12

Dazered t1_j2aqace wrote

From what I heard it's also easier for Scrubs to do things right since the focus was never on the illness. A show like House had to make illnesses outlandish to be entertaining.

That’s true! It’s not a focus, but there are often throwaway lines regarding a diagnosis based on symptoms or medicine the can treat/help it. And I’ve heard that’s accurate. But good point- the diseases or illnesses are generally irrelevant to the plot.

14

tomc_23 t1_j2b6iub wrote

Ehh… I mean. Sure, in the most superficial sense, they are similar because both feature the lavish lives of the 1%. But they’re NOTHING alike in basically every other capacity.

Succession is about how dysfunctional and terrible the Roy family is because of their wealth and privilege, and the draw is in seeing the absurd shit and corporate maneuvering they attempt backfire in their faces. Meanwhile, despite being terrible people, there’s still a very real sense of sympathy for them as people, which is a testament to the casting and performances as much as the writing. They suck, but over time we see why they suck, and while they may have infinitely more than what most of us enjoy, they are maladapted, crippled by insecurities, neurotic.

Honestly, Billions is the worst possible comparison, but if you want a series that is basically the closest comparison, it’s actually another HBO series, The Righteous Gemstones. That series is essentially the megachurch version of Succession, with almost the exact same premise and composition of characters (the presumptuous heir apparent who isn’t the man he believes himself to be, the immature younger brother who clearly struggles with his sexuality, and the sister who fancies herself the clever one, but is just as fucked up as the others, and also has a punching bag husband she takes for granted).

edit: Was on mobile before.

To be clear, while I say Righteous Gemstones is the better comparison to Succession, by no means is it within the context of OP's prompt. Righteous Gemstones is a very good series, that just so happens to share the same premise as Succession. It just happens to go in a wildly different direction (as it should).

Meanwhile, Billions is about the rivalry between two titans of their respective realms, and how far they are willing to go to "win," even after it becomes self-destructive. There's ultimately no "winner," because the story always finds a way to preserve the status quo, and after 5+ seasons, Damian Lewis ultimately leaves the show for deeply personal reasons (the sudden loss of his wife), not because the story ultimately arrives at a conclusion as to who prevails in their rivalry. All throughout this time, while other billionaires may be presented as laughably out of touch with reality, Bobby Axelrod himself is generally treated as a "cool" character; someone many finance bro-types probably aspire to be like. And one wouldn't be able to blame them, because Billions does not attempt to present him as anything other than a demigod with near-supernatural powers of calculation in his ability to see the patterns of the market.

Bobby dresses cool, drives cool cars, and the show's use of "cool" cameos and constant (and I mean CONSTANT) references to pop culture make Bobby seem practically pulled right out of the version of cool-guy masculinity Esquire Magazine tries to sell. He's by no means a satire of wealth and privilege, he's like the young, Steve McQueen-version of Logan Roy from Succession, since both are meant to be the level-headed, intelligent sharks who arose from poverty to become titans of industry.

I'm sorry, they're just not comparable and have completely different themes, motifs, characters, and storylines.

17

testrail t1_j2bumgi wrote

I mean they’re not really all that similar. Succession is significantly closer to Yellowstone than Billions, or even the Righteous Gemstones. It’s about family dynamics in the .01%

Billions is like Suits, but with different gimmicks. Super hero lawyers vs. super hero hedge fund Guys and DA’s and psychiatrists. It’s just marvel presents Ivy League professionals.

If you actually want to sit down and watch all of the news or get the full weather forecast, this format can be annoying.

The classic is the Star Trek Deep Space Nine versus Babylon 5. The creator of B5 had shopped the show to Paramount, it passed on it, yet developed DS9.

Lots of parallels to the two shows so JMS has a valid claim. That said, they are different and there is much to like from both. In my opinion DS9 is among the best of Trek, with its writers/producers going on to other shows like Breaking Bad.

HawlSera t1_j2duwp8 wrote

I don't know if I hate Chakotay or Janeway more

Chakotay is such a bizzare Native American stereotype who's backstories involves Alt Right conspiracy theories about how "Indians are secretly aliens!", he is such a stereotype would have been laughed off the set of TOS, a show from the 60's.

It's really bad considering my introduction to the show was binging DS9 (First time I'd ever seen the show from start to finish, my previous introduction was playing games while my dad had it on for noise when I was a literal child), so coming off the coattails of one of the best written black characters in all of sci-fi (my main man, Captain Sisko) to...

A character who is such an offensive stereotype, I am legitimately surprised he doesn't talk like

"Big Chief say to Chakotay, phaser is weapon of the pale face! Me bring Tomahawk to battle, drink Klingon Fire Water with proud of great hunt and brave spirit of Mighty Andorian Water Buffalo will smile upon Starfleet Tribe after scalping many enemies!"

Like when Janeway treated finding her "spirit animal", like she's getting her nails done at a fucking pre-teen slumber party, I could feel myself dying of cringe, wondering if an adult actually wrote this.

After I learned that Chakotay's dialogue had been written by a Klansman who made up a Native American ancestry to sell novellas about his "Proud Noble Savage people", I must say I was quite shocked. In fact, I would daresay my surprise was comparable to noticing a large ball of fire floating high up in the sky on my morning walk!

And can we talk about Janeway?

I gave up on the show during season 2, my dad (a trekkie in his own right) said "Okay, but you have only yourself to blame for missing out on 7 of 9! She's really awesome!"

The only thing that could have saved the show is if a real native American showed up and killed off Chakotay and then lead the crew in mutiny against Janeway, because holy shit. We finally get a female Captain, and she is either a sociopath or entirely incompetent.

I have never seen a character so consistently inconsistent, to the point where her morals realign depending on "What will prevent her from returning to the alpha quadrant."

In season one, her stance on the Prime Directive (one of the more questionable parts of Star Trek lore to begin with as it means Starfleet isn't allowed to offer humanitarian aide to anyone outside of their inner circle, despite being a post-scarcity faction that could give away an entire planet's worth of Thanksgiving and merely have to let the replicator charge for an extra couple minutes before using it again), rapidly changes from episode to episode.

Janeway either thinks believes it is a shining beacon that makes Starfleet what it is, OR, she thinks it's an archaic primitive ideal not worth the datapad it was originally stored on.

It depends on if following it or ignoring it will get her crew back home, if it will, she ignores it, if abandoning it "just this once" gets them home... oh well, now's not the time to compromise our ideals....

I think the last straw was when Q was all "Look I'll take you back home myself, just help me talk my friend out of killing himself and I can do it by snapping my fingers." and Janeway was like "I'm an immoral monster who hates my crew more than Chakotay's dialogue hates indigenous Americans, if I could kill your friend with a phaser rifle, he would already be dead."

Okay, I may be paraphrasing, they might have pretended that there's a moral argument for boredom being an adequate reason for suicide instead of going full mask off.

Janeway is the true villain of Voyager, and no other character in all of Star Trek is more worth a punch in the face. Hell, if I was stuck in a room with a phaser that had two charges, and Janeway and Gul'Dukat were there, I'd shoot Janeway twice and say "Look obviously Space Hitler did it." if Starfleet asked me any questions.

I have never seen a more two-faced scoundrel in all of sci-fi, and she's supposed to be the hero.

BitterFuture t1_j2dwk9m wrote

I say...is it too much to ask for both?

I watched a bit longer than you did (far too long), and you really missed out on the later episode where Q returns and straight-up tells Janeway, "If you have sex with me, I'll send you and your ship home." Which is, uh...not a good look for anyone involved, writers included.

>I gave up on the show during season 2, my dad (a trekkie in his own right) said "Okay, but you have only yourself to blame for missing out on 7 of 9! She's really awesome!"

7 of 9 is, on the whole, a pretty interesting character, but much more potential than actual. Jeri Ryan is absolutely a great actress who's risen well above the dreck she was given, but seriously...they gave her a costume so tight she repeatedly passed out on the set because the costume was so tight she couldn't breathe fully. It wasn't just the writing on Voyager that was horrific, it was the entire production team.

And in her return in Picard, it's not much better. She went from slowly embracing her own humanity years before to being an unrepentant murderer, as well as acting out some pretty insulting "fan service" by jumping into a relationship with a woman she barely exchanged five sentences with.

...I have some opinions.

2

HawlSera t1_j2ezo64 wrote

Lesbianism used to be "risque and sexy"

Now it's "We have an unlikable woman in a relationship with another one! Their dialogue is centered around how woke the show is!"

I'm saying Queer Female representation is still terrible for different reasons

Why would Q even want to bang Chakotay. His kind isn't even interested in sex... and if they were.. he could make his own Janeway. He can do anything.

I found Lexx randomly on the Roku Channel and watched that for a while and had to go on TV Tropes to understand in detail what I was watching.

Lexx is what Farscape would be if it was more lewd-in-disguise (referring to the way Lexx got around censorship.)

It was a Canadian/German production, so, that might explain some things. Might.

Between the two, gotta go with FarScape. Much more tighter in terms of story. And again, Jim Henson puppets.

Nah, Mr Inbetween is better than all those shows.

Pulls Ray's mad smile

Edit: To add some justification. It was consistently funny and touching. It had a mix of singular (episodic) and long-running storylines which remained compelling. Plus it ended on a bitter sweet high. The central performance was mesmerising, Ray could be in equal parts scary and a heartfelt character.

The weirdest is that Red Dwarf and Star Trek Voyager have a similar premiss but the former is not only better but is easier to take seriously because even Lister isn't as thick headed as Janeway or as racist as Chakotay

Dave and Atlanta.

I preferred Dave, I bet you weren't expecting that.

Lil Dicky is a genius who wrote an unflinching character portrayal and wasn't afraid to get vulnerable and satirise his own ego with it. Same with the character of Gator, with an incredible look at bipolar disorder. On top of that, it remained very funny. Season 2 really elevated the show.

Atlanta started out strong but then became a circle-jerk for Donald Glover's ego from season 3. I always felt this was a shame as the first two seasons, especially the second, were really interesting. (Not seen Season 4 yet - I was so put off by Season 3).

Erick_Galdino t1_j2bch2y wrote

I didn't like Atlanta's season 3 either, but thankfully season 4 went back to its roots and closed the series beautifully. You really should watch it if you liked the first two seasons.

There’s a Get Shorty tv show btw

I’d say the first time I ran into this was Parker lewis can’t lose and the Ferris buellers day off ( the tv show)

Parker lewis was amazing Ferris was a quick cash grab to counter program against Parker lewis

I keep telling any fans of Scubs to track down Parker lewis bill Lawrence was good friends with the writers on Parker lewis. The influence is pretty obvious

Funnily enough, I'm in the middle of doing a double rewatch of The Paradise and Mr Selfridge.

I still stand by my original opinion that Paradise S1 > Selfridge S1 and Selfridge S2 > Paradise S2. I'm currently on Selfridge S3 and so far it's a hot mess, so we'll see how the final verdict plays out.

I love the history of thematically competing tv shows that happen at the same (or roughly the same) time.

The Adams Family > The Munsters

Bewitched > I Dream of Jeannie

Parker Louis Can't Lose > Ferris Bueller (TV version)

The Real Ghostbusters > Ghostbusters (Cartoons)

Seinfeld > Friends

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace > Children's Hospital

The Bad Half: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself > Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Ozark isn’t as good but “unwatchably mediocre” is a complete lie. The only place Ozark truly dropped the ball was a very rushed/sudden ending.

Reasonable argument! I still give BrBa the edge. Both spectacular.

4

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo t1_j2bexkm wrote

That’s fair! I think the biggest difference for me was that I binged BB and the character changes were just too quick, it was jarring and I had to quit. BCS I watched much more episodically, and that was way better for the slow burn.

The 4400 started out fine and mostly stayed that way until it finished, Heroes started out stronger but took a nosedive.

Also Manifest has a more similar premise to 4400 than Heroes does.

Does anyone else remember that TWO series started at the same time based on Saturday Night Live? Studio 60 was written by Aaron Sorkin and starred Matthew Perry. It was supposed to be the hit winner, but we all know what happened.
