Sign of a bad journalist…put a 20-40 yr old photo on and article about an 80 yr old..

I'd say it depends if they retained their fame in later years. If by using the old photo significantly more people will recognise the person then it feels fair.

The photo wouldn’t be sourced by the person writing the article normally.

78 is still old, even these days. Pretty much bang on male life expectancy at birth (and only 3 years or so under life expectancy of someone who reached 25).

I've noticed people have developed weird ideas about what constitutes being old the last few years.
