I grew up watching That 70s Show. The 3 main characters are Leia Foreman, Gwen and Ozzy; 2 girls and gay dude. The show seems to be mainly geared towards teenage girls. So far the jokes just aren't landing for me, personally. I can see where maybe younger females may, but so far it just isn't for me.

The whole premise is weird tbh. Leia gets drunk on the water tower (she's 14), and as a reward, Eric and Donna let her stay with Kitty and Redd? Make that make sense.

I like Gwen, she's the most sincere character. Ozzie is kinda a stereotypical gay dude. The other 3 are kinda just there.

I find Leia character to be a little weird. She seems extra horny for a 14 year old girl, and her failed advances on guys is just cheesy. This is in reference to the mall scene she is forcing herself on the other kids. Most of the jokes are cheesy. Honestly the more I watch the more I feel like im watching a old Nickelodeon/Teen Nick show.

The best scenes involve Kitty and Redd, but it's not enough to save the show so far, IMO. The guest appearances that I've seen so far are pretty cool. It was good to see most of the old cast. The first episode so far is my favorite. Eric and Donna doing the circle up stairs with Red and Kitty was pretty funny tbh.

So far it's also little on 90s references. Law and Order? Friends? Briefly going over the internet? I did like the Beverly Hills Spoof to be fair. Also the reason That 70s Show still resonates with most people is because it was written to be timeless and for a universal audience. There was something for everybody and most of all it didn't come off cheesy all the time.

As said, it feels like a grown up Victorious before a That 70's Show Spin Off. I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion but I felt the need to share.

What are your guy's thoughts?

90s jokes everywhere would be awful. That 70s Show seemed to be about people that happened to take place in the 70s. It sounds like you want That 80s Show, which to me was just one 80s joke after another that happened to have a cast.

No no not at all! And I agree with what you said about that 80s show. The production for this came across too much like a Dan Schneider-esq show with some weed and sex jokes. Like for example if I walked in on my daughter watching this I would assume she watching a Disney or TeenNick show. That's what I don't like.

karivara t1_j57eudg wrote

I agree it felt Disney Channel-esque initially. The 5th episode landed better. I haven't watched the 6th yet but I hope the upward trend continues.

BloodyCobbler t1_j57c5oy wrote

That's fair. I haven't seen it yet but I intend to, I actually forgot it was released. I never saw any of Dan Schneider's Nickelodeon shows but I am aware of it and his creepy behavior. I actually avoided those shows because they seemed to be for a younger demo than myself. If the humor does skew that immature I will probably be disappointed.

Do me a favor and watch one episode or maybe 2 episodes of Victorious, and then watch this. It's the production. I never watched any Disney shows, but my wife said it also kind of reminded her of one of those. Let me know honestly if you do it. 🤘🤘

I think it’s cute and fun and I love it, personally.

Also, teen girls are just as horny and awkward as teen boys. Kind of weird to say she’s “too horny for a teen girl”.

That’s a pretty big blanket statement there.

Just because no girls were aggressive or weirdly sexually towards YOU doesn’t mean that they aren’t. Because they are. Putting a gender to horniness is asinine.

“She’s a girl! She’s not allowed to be horny!”

You’re saying you don’t like this one bc Leia is “too horny” and yet the original had Fez and Kelso. Did you find their hormones problematic?

You also call it a “girls show” which doesn’t make much sense to me.

DeviousOne420 OP t1_j5a2xra wrote

Well I'll put it like this, if I walked in on my daughter watching it and I had never seen the show before I would immediately assume that it's a Teen Nick or a Disney show. The Editing and Production came across like a old Dan Schnieder show from 2010. Those shows are typically marketed towards teenagers and young girls.

Fez was always creepy, and that was part of his shtick. Leia's segment comes across cringe and awkward. Its the writing.

The show was not written for people like me to watch. That's just the end of it. It was written for much younger people and it feels like women. I didn't say it was a bad thing, I just said that's how it comes across.

I don’t think you understand what they were going for with Leia.

The whole plot about Leia trying to get a kiss was not out of some lustful nature but because she felt behind compared to her friends, especially in comparison to the guy she was interested in. So her chasing down a kiss was literally her trying to accomplish a goal tied to her sense of maturity. I’d go as far as to say that she’s one of the more tame members of the group, so your characterization is rather odd.

She’s not rewarded for her behavior for the 4th of July as we see from Eric and Donna’s reaction, especially the former who had to be thoroughly convinced to let her stay. And we see this even further when Donna literally drives all the way to Wisconsin on the mere assumption that her daughter is having sex.

I understand the points you’re trying to make but at the same time some of these takes are a little misconstrued.

>She’s not rewarded for her behavior for the 4th of July as we see from Eric and Donna’s reaction, especially the former who had to be thoroughly convinced to let her stay.

How is she punished then? The punishment sure isn't staying with Kitty and Redd. That's what she wanted the entire time. So how is making her stay a punishment when that's exactly what she wanted? And Eric didn't want her to stay because he wanted to be with her. Not to mention she just struts in there, beer in hand and, talks shit... at 14. In That 70s Show kids could drink at 18 and everyone still had to hide their beer and stuff around Redd. In fact there are whole episodes dedicated to the kids stealing beet from Red or trying to get beer in under his nose because they weren't cool with it. In the 90snthe drinking age is 21 and they're suddenly cool with a 14 year old getting crushed? They didn't seem to care. They grounded her after the rave then hand her a car.

Also Red is so much softer on her. He hands the keys to the Cruiser over with a heartwarming speech right after sge gets caught sneaking out to a rave? He never did that shit for Eric. In fact Eric begged for Vista and Red sorta held it over his head as something to earn for multiple seasons. They softened him up like crazy.

>The whole plot about Leia trying to get a kiss was not out of some lustful nature but because she felt behind compared to her friends, especially in comparison to the guy she was interested in.

I get it. It's was just awkward and unfunny. It was honestly cringe and leaned hard into TeenNick territory.

All I have to say is that I really enjoyed that 70s show, and as someone who was a teen in the 90s, this just doesn’t feel at all like what I experienced. The 90s references are forced and the style is way off. Also, the jokes aren’t very good and are killed by the constant laugh track. My husband and i turned it off after the second episode to find something better to watch.

Slingblade1170 t1_j57i7z6 wrote

My wife and I along with 2 friends binged the whole thing yesterday and we all enjoyed it. I thought the kids were better than the trailer showed but some things about them are a bit sloppy. I think if the show continues, they will find their groove like the original cast just never be quite on that level though. As for all the original cast, it was fantastic especially Red and Kitty. One of the very last scenes of the last episode did actually make me bust out laughing but no spoilers so I'll let everyone see for themselves.

The more I think about it, the more this shows sucks. It completely relies on nostalgia to work. If this show had to stand on it's own and That 70's show never existed. This would be a massive flop. And as far as the new characters go, Gwen is the only one I like. Ozzie is a massive jerk. Why would anyone be friends with him? The acting also isn't very good in general. And what's with Leia forcing herself on boys at the mall?? Let's reverse genders a bit and have a boy do that and everyone will be shouting rape. I was a teenager in the 90's and i cannot identify with these people. I watched some of the best bits of the 70's show again on Youtube after this and that show was just leagues ahead. Kelso's pocket exploding still has me in stitches. The 90's show is a pale imitation that should not have seen the light of day.

While it was great to see the OG cast reprise their roles, Red and Kitty definitely carried the show. The writing, direction and especially the editing, were all over the place that was akin to Nickelodeon/Disney Channel sitcoms. The chemistry between the new cast isn't there yet but they tend to work a bit well in their little moments together.

Some of these jokes and situations worked in that 70's show cos the characters were 17 (maybe 16) in the first season, these guys are 14.

I too thought it was totally weird for a 14 or 15 year old to be drinking. It made sense in the 70s when the drinking age was 18 but in the 90s seems a little young but I could be wrong.

−9

Maninhartsford t1_j57j72u wrote

It's a reflection of reality. Teenagers that young are still drinking today, regardless of the drinking age. Some don't, of course. It all depends on the friend group.

12

theuniquejimmy t1_j57kbnl wrote

I do agree but I don’t think it’s usually a nice group of kids like that more so a group of delinquents, kids who are getting in real trouble at school. My brother and his friends did drink at 15 or 16 but they were all also thrown out of high school because of other bad shit they pulled. Two friends of mine also started at 16, both alcoholics currently and one also a drug addict so it just doesn’t feel right. Plus in that 70s show drinking was way more common with young people back then especially with guys like Hyde around.

−5

official_bagel t1_j580fla wrote

Counterpoint: My friends and I drank at that age, all got good grades and are now fully functioning members of society. Can't speak to the 90s specifically as I was a teenager in the 2000s, but your personal antecedents are hardly a hard and fast rule.

EDIT: Looked it up and between the years 1991 - 1993 the median age for teenagers to start drinking was 13.65 years, so a 14 - 15 year old drinking is right in line.

Sheltered? No it’s called having good parents and good friends who didn’t want to do stupid shit. Assuming you are an adult if you think that not drinking as a teen means your sheltered says it all and the cycle continues if you have kids I guess but fyi kids shouldn’t drink.

1

KeyLimeGuy69 t1_j5azrgn wrote

It goes without saying that kids should not drink, but you were 100% sheltered if you think other teens didn't drink in the 90s. I was a teen in the 90s and was in the minority of those not drinking.

2

First of all I really think the minority were non drinkers, but this discussion really matters on social class in an area and many other factors to really be discussed. Since were both in our 40s you should probably know you are using the world sheltered wrong, it makes no sense. If you would like to say anything slightly insulting I’d use the word naive.
