God damn it, Disney. Learn to control yourselves.

He would have done this with anybody's money. Anybody's.

Yeah, I mean Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures were a thing on his first run though. He was doing a shared universe 15 years ago. This news shouldn't surprise anyone who followed his original run.

Not to mention all the unofficial spin-offs that have existed alongside the Doctor Who universe for years before that even.

They’ve tried it like 3 times. I remember they had that spin-off Class that was kinda like a darker Buffy set in the Doctor Who universe.

I've never been a big Doctor Who person but I've always liked the Daleks, there's something fun and quaint about a race of alien assholes who just want to kill everybody who's not them. No shades of grey, no sympathetic qualities but just the right amount of cheese and camp. I'd check out a show with them as the focus.

For emotionless killing machines, their snark is amazing.

Cybermen: Daleks be warned, you have declared war upon the Cybermen.

Daleks: This is not war, this is pest control!

Cybermen: We have five million cybermen. How many are you?

Daleks: Four.

Cybermen: You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?

Daleks: We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek! You are superior in only one respect!

Cybermen: What is that?

Daleks: You are better at dying!

52

stumpcity t1_j64apu6 wrote

I don't think we will, unless it's radically reimagined. Not just because Barrowman is basically persona non grata now, but because Children of Earth was basically the best ending for that show and it then got horribly botched by Miracle Day in so, so, so many ways - not least of which being that was the season of the show that cemented the idea Torchwood WAS Captain Jack Harkness, and that Torchwood couldn't really be done without him.

Had Miracle Day been a) good at all and b) led by Gwen, with no Jack anywhere in sight, it could have had a lot more promise. Granted it still probably would have fallen way short of that promise, but still. There was an opportunity there that got so blown out, and then Barrowman's real life horseshit pissed on those ashes... I don't think Torchwood really comes back. Not unless it gets completely rethought/rewritten.

Now... a standalone 8-episode Eighth Doctor miniseries starring Paul McGann? Yes, fucking please.

Children of Earth is one of the most depressing ends to a show I can think of. Nobody wins, everyone is sad, there’s no resolution and then it just ends.

Miracle day wasn’t great but it did open the door for more.

Hasn’t Barrowman been on Dr Who since his cancelling though? Wasn’t he in the last season, and teased future appearances?

stumpcity t1_j67d0oq wrote

>Hasn’t Barrowman been on Dr Who since his cancelling though? Wasn’t he in the last season, and teased future appearances?

Nope. He was not in the last season, and the one appearance he made in Whitaker's show happened before the bad word around him went critical.

5

MiltonFriedman2036 t1_j65p133 wrote

Russell Davies won't give a shit about that and will bring Barrowman back.

3

stumpcity t1_j66fz0g wrote

I really do think he gives a shit, and he will not be bringing him back.

There’s too much downside and very little upside and there’s no point in gambling on odds that long when the house is already staking you way beyond prior expectations

If torchwood is soft-rebooted or revived, Barrowman most likely won’t return, but Jack will probably be referenced with something explaining why jack isn’t in the show

mikexmachina t1_j63vck4 wrote

The possibilities really are endless.

I'd love a Donna Noble comedic spinoff where she investigates alien phenomena, only to realize they're hoaxes or elaborate pranks.

Or a show with some past companions who form their own alien task force and patrol the Earth in the Doctor's stead, like a Torchwood 4.0.

37

LupinThe8th t1_j63wzpj wrote

At this point I assume that's what all former companions are up to. Sarah Jane, Donna, Tegan, Ace, Martha, Mickey, and Graham have all been shown getting into alien shenanigans Post-Doctor. The end of the last special even showed them forming a support group.

They just released a trailer for a Blu-ray collection of series 9 back in the 70s - and the trailer is a mini-adventure featuring Jo Grant and a Sea Devil. Yeah, they're marketing a Blu-ray box set with a reminder that 50 years later Jo is still having adventures. What other franchise does things like that?

25

mikexmachina t1_j63ztdu wrote

Yeah the support group is what made me think of all the past companions still out there. As someone who didn't watch the original series I think it would be fun to see those companions and flashbacks to earlier adventures. DW had such a rich (if not convoluted) history - they should tap into it!

8

Fugitivebush t1_j64j24w wrote

yea honestly, a companion show seems pretty likely as the first big earth focused spin-off.

As for Daleks and Cybermen and whats next, could be anyone's guess, but Doctor Who does leave for a lot of really good potential ideas.

ContinuumGuy t1_j64p2y3 wrote

I remember he said previously how there are three major space franchises in the English-speaking world (Star Trek, Star Wars, and DW), and that of the three, Doctor Who is the only one that doesn't have a near-endless stream of content. Not surprised he's looking to get to that level.

23

CashWho t1_j677vuz wrote

Ehh that's kinda weird to say considering it does have plenty of content, just not televised. There's loads and loads of comics and books and once you add the audioplays, you have literally hundreds of hours of content to consume.

6

RogueIslesRefugee t1_j67nuh9 wrote

I think it was in regards to new content constantly coming out, not just having a large back catalogue of content.

6

CashWho t1_j682wwy wrote

Right but that's what I'm talking about. Doctor Who audioplays come out every month and while the other avenues have slowed down, we still get a few books and comics per year.

5

DeedTheInky t1_j686dth wrote

The 8th Doctor pretty much entirely exists in the Big Finish audio shows which I think is neat. In the 'main' show I think we've only seen him in the 90's TV movie, a Youtube short and that cameo in 13's last episode.

The relevant quote from the GQ interview that Radio Times has (poorly) excerpted here:

>I watch the Star Trek empire with vast envy: the way that's turned itself from an old archive show into something fantastic. The cast is so progressive, so good, so beautiful. And very cleverly I think Star Trek is reaching out to making something like fifty-two episodes a year. So that's your yearly show, genius. And there's a problem with the BBC, it's a public service broadcaster, so there's only so much they'll ever commit to.
>
>So I thought — with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC's measures — it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off. Those spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce, I think that's fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things.

So, yes, he's absolutely taking the money and running with it. And it really does look like while people keep comparing it to Marvel and to Star Wars (it happens in the GQ interview proper almost immediately as well, and has already forked off into it's own grumpy fanboy "Grr DISNEEEYYY thing here in the thread, even) what Russell himself is using as a model is Star Trek for Paramount+

As someone who just so happens to like most of what's happening with Star Trek at Paramount Plus - who in fact thinks this is probably the most consistently good and inarguably POPULAR that Star Trek has been in general for decades now - this sounds like a great sign, to me.

>!(No, I dont' like everything happening with Star Trek, but then again, I never did. Star Trek - and Star Wars - are more than half absolute shite and always have been. The weird notion that these multi-decade multimedia ongoing branded properties are best judged by being always good all the time with no fuckups ever is... bizarre)!<

7

DMPunk t1_j642982 wrote

I've never liked any of the Doctor Who spin-offs and I don't understand them conceptually. The only thing that the show has ever positioned as being important is the Doctor, and whoever his companion is at the time. And given the nature of the show, there isn't the sort of cohesion that lends itself to the kind of franchise RTD wants it to be. It's too big and too random, with no internal consistency. And it's also the kind of show where the spin-offs would be subordinate to the main show. With Star Trek for instance, each spin-off stands equal to the others. I can't see that happening here, which makes you wonder why bother?

Alllllllllll that being said, if one of the spin-offs is a show called Master What about the Master and his companions flying around time and space starting shit, I would be very into that.

Quexana t1_j64y7zh wrote

This is adding more ammo to my theory that part of why Disney bought into the show is that they want to be able to add a new property to the Marvel-Star Wars cycle... the only issue from RTD's side is that unlike at the BBC where the spinoffs can air on BBC Two or Three, giving the original show pride of place, at Disney all shows would presumably be at the same level.
