This has been ongoing for 2 weeks now but yesterday I heard the outcome.
Two weeks ago my partner’s best friend was incarcerated. His family contacted us to figure out what to do with his dogs. For a little more information he was incarcerated because his (now ex) girlfriend submitted a false report of domestic abuse (there is video evidence of her instigating this physical altercation, she has a history of being violent toward him). All his friends and family have told him over the years that he needed to get away from her because of similar situations in the past with her being abusive and toxic.
My partner and I don’t live in the state and have been incredibly busy with work that we couldn’t come by the apartment complex during business hours or at any reasonable hour if the day, we could only call. His family didn’t want to be involved in case his crazy ex was squatting in the apartment, as she’s not on the lease. No one had any extra keys to the apartment to give us.
We couldn’t get a hold of anyone of authority in the apartment complex to talk to us about letting us come by to grab the dogs. Days were passing, we had no idea if his ex was there and caring for the dogs or MIA. We had a member of our family in the area stop by to see if anyone was home but they said there didn’t appear to be someone there.
We desperately tried to get a hold of anyone as the days were passing and by day 5 we contacted the local police about it because we were concerned these dogs could be starving to death in their kennels. I left our details because we wanted to find a foster family for them until the owner was released. At this point we didn’t have a court date and had seen his bond requests get rejected in the case search.
We kept calling trying to inquire about the dogs concerned about their health, we must have left our contact information with several departments but no one would actually TALK to us about the situation. It was always them taking a message or transferring us to another department to leave a voicemail.
My partner’s friend was released a week ago with an ankle monitor ordered to stay at his father’s residence. His father requested our help to retrieve some of his stuff from the apartment and to see if the dogs were there now that they had the key.
It turned out his ex girlfriend was squatting in the apartment and a sherif had to be involved. We come to find the dogs are gone. We found out yesterday from my partner’s friend that animal control seized the 3 dogs. We aren’t sure if his ex had signed them over or if they had been let in by the apartment that had been ignoring our calls to try to retrieve them ourselves.
We come to find out they euthanized two of the dogs for having been pit bulls in a county where they aren’t legal in and one dog was on pet finder having been put up for adoption. We’re trying to help him get his remaining dog back.
The very dogs we were trying access and care for were killed, the very thing we were trying to avoid happening. We feel terrible. These dogs were his life. If we knew this would be the outcome we would never have gotten animal control involved. We fully expected someone to let us come claim the dogs in this situation.
TL;DR TIFU by indirectly killing two dogs. We contacted authorities to try to make sure three dogs weren’t starving to death in an incarcerated friend’s apartment and to allow us to find a foster home in our circle of friends and family until our friend got out of jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Authorizes euthanized two of the dogs due to being a specific breed and listed one dog for adoption.
