I think it's so you can replace the foam, tbh...

A lot of modern sofas have a plasticky lining on the sofa cushion covers that also doesn't wash well.

These did come clean though! I was surprised they weren't "scotchguarded" as old as the sofa appears to be.

FYI don't do it. That stuff is toxic.
