If anything, the person who sees the message would probably think that you didn't know he passed away.

But all you did was not know he had passed and messaged him

It's normal if you didn't know.

It really wasn't a fuck up. You weren't close so you weren't informed or knew that he passed away.

So don't blame yourself for not knowing.

Yeah I know what you mean, but his profile had loads of posts regarding his passing from friends and family. Somehow they never made my timeline
