I love the carbonation in sparkling water and I also love Liquid I.V. I just now had the brilliant idea to combine the two. I've combined sparkling water with fruits and syrups before so I was expecting a tasty, hydrating beverage. What happened next was similar to a child's volcano experiment in science class. I panicked and tried to seal the bottle with my mouth but the bubbles just kept coming and I could feel them approaching my nose. I ran to the trashcan and spat it out, only to watch about half of my bottle of water shoot out like a tiny geyser. There was no stopping it. So now there is a trail of sticky water across the kitchen floor and a half empty bottle of lightly flavored, disappointing water.

I feel like I should have known better but, how could I have known?

TL ; DR Added hydration powder to sparkling water and caused a bubbly mess

ELI5: Sparkling drinks bubble because there's gas (carbon dioxide) dissolved in the water, and that gas collects into a visible bubble on rough surfaces that give the bubble a spot to "cling" on to. Drinking glasses are mostly smooth except for microscopic cracks and imperfections, so the gas forms bubbles slowly. Powdered or granulated drink mix is essentially nothing but rough surfaces, millions of times more rough spots than the inside of your glass. All the fizz in your drink turns into bubbles at once, and you get a handheld volcano.

That makes all of the sense. Thank you so much for breaking that down LI5. Lesson learned, next time I'll pour just a little at a time. The half I salvaged was really tasty so I haven't given up yet.

Dissolve your drink powder into a small amount of normal water first, so it becomes a concentrated liquid instead of a powder. Then add that into your carbonated water.

That is genius. Thank you. Can... I run other dumb ass ideas by you so you can tell me, scientifically, why it is a dumb ass idea? No more than like 30 times a year, tops.

Today I learned this would happen if I did that.. time for some science

I’ve even had this happen when trying to use a Soda stream to carbonate flavoured water.
