Today I (20) was working at my job in Maine and my front end manager (65) went on a half hour break. During that time the store got super busy and I was by myself so I was trying to get customers out the door as soon as possible.
During that time I guess a person from the alcohol control came in to do a "sting". I was so distracted by the long lines that I forgot to check their id and sold them beer. A little bit later an older gentlemen came in with the beer in his hands. He said that the person who just bought this beer was underage. I asked if he wanted to speak to my manager who was back from break. He said yes so I brought her out and they talked.
I didn't overhear what they were saying, but my coworker told me not to worry. However as you can guess I am worrying. The actual manager will be in on Monday and I don't know how much trouble I am going to be in.
Edit: Because so many people keep asking. The law in my state of Maine states that if someone is between the ages of 17 to 21 they can sell alcohol with supervision from someone over 21. In this case there was no supervison but I didn't know I needed supervision at the time.
UPDATE: So I just spoke to the actual manager. She said that I won't know if I'm getting fined until they receive a letter from the state. Also I am keeping my job, she said that I'm a good employee and that it is on them, because of the fact that I was left by myself and that they had gotten so lack on IDing. This was also the store's first offense so they will probably just get a warning. However the store is going to have some new protocols going forward. Such as I can not be left by myself for people to go on break and if I am there is to be a sign but up saying that we cannot do alcohol sales at this moment. Also we are to id everybody now, regardless of age. The manager I had at the time is going to be spoken too, she also is going to keep her job, but if they find she left me alone again without putting up the sign she won't. So that is what happened. Also a few things, for everyone who was saying I fucked up. Yeah I know that is why I posted here rather then somewhere else. I knew I fucked up. Also I am a girl, I know some people were saying I was a guy. It doesn't bother me that much but just wanted to let people know. Have a good rest of your day!
