It sounds like he used the Paul Mitchell teatree shampoo which also has a buttload of peppermint in it. That's the real culprit.
As a sidenote, Dr Bronner's teatree won't burn you but the DB peppermint sure will. My husband used it to wash his entire lower region once and immediately regretted it.
