To be fair, the mortality rate of a tonsillectomy is very, very low. I thought I had lost a ton of blood but I still didn’t require a transfusion. Once you get to the ER, it’s a pretty routine surgery to patch you back up. It’s just highly alarming and very uncomfortable.

Humans can lose a shocking volume of blood without it being a major problem. And, TBH, the bigger issue is the lost hydration for most people.

I think I would be extra worried about folks who live alone, & children, or others who may not be able to know, fully understand, or be able to communicate that there is bleeding/complications happening (especially at night).
It just all sounds a lot more intense & painful than what I was aware of. I watched a best friend's toddler recover & it was so sad. I remember it was a challenge keeping him hydrated bc of the pain. Kids are tough tho.
