Just yesterday I had a review during which I told my manager I always feel that people are lying when they call in sick last minute. "It's a universal excuse to get out of work and meetings" I said. Now ironically, I ate some samosas at 6 in the morning and I'm withering with pain. My best guess is acidity or indigestion or something. Anyhow, I have to get to work within an hour and I'm now realising I cannot call in sick. Now I don't want to accept it but it feels like karma. It was probably toxic of me to be unnecessarily sceptical of a colleague very conveniently getting sick every second Monday. I think I'll update whatever happens today in the comments. One thing is for sure, I'm not skipping work today. I'm guessing I should suffer in silence instead of being obnoxious and claiming I'm so great for coming to work even though I was sick

TL;DR. Claimed people lie about being sick to skip work. Fell sick myself

Yeah, that sounds like karma for being so toxic about your coworkers.

I'd say it's more toxic to skip out on work and have the rest of the team need to cover for you, of course if it doesnt make more work for other then who cares if you call in but it's a dick move when it does make more work for them which sounds like it does here.

Most places have that guy who calls in all the time and geuss what no one likes him from the top to the bottom of the business. People are often times toxic towards toxic people so look at the source not the reaction.

Toxic to skip out on work when your sick? Idk about that. I'd rather be at home when sick than risk contaminating food at my workplace and everybody else along with it.

Or maybe I misread something.

Its toxic to skip work when your not sick while pretending to be sick it's not that vague.

If your actually sick then ya call in but when your not you shouldnt.

yup, it is toxic, that the employer is so cheap as to put workers in that position

Oh definitely, but end of the day it's your job and still shitty of you if you skip work while knowing it will make it harder for others when your not really sick.

You’ve got a lot of vitriol in the comments and somewhat rightfully so because people can’t stand this kinda attitude.

I’ll say good on you, OP. Recognizing one’s fault is hard and it’s even more hard to come out and say “I fucked up” to your boss and to a public forum. Carry this lesson about being more compassionate to all aspects of your life. Don’t just wait until it conveniently affects you.

Thanks OTTERSage, I can't deny I was inconsiderate even if it was a casual remark. The good thing is that my colleagues laughed it off. In fact my boss was very clear that if you're not feeling well, be sure to take a leave

If your boss is that person, odds are they e already noticed that person who is always out the 2nd Monday of the month. It could be legit. But if you bring it up again, be prepared to be hit with something along the lines of: maybe you need to more to do if you have all this time to keep up with the comings and goings of a colleague. But kudos to you for owning the karmic retribution!! Hope you feel better!

During our break I sincerely brought up the topic and accepted I was too harsh. My manager told me I should have taken a leave. Lesson learnt. Health-wise, I'm okay now. Just had to make a lot of trips to the washroom

I once hurt my back really bad picking up my towel getting out of shower, boss did not believe me.

Months later he comes over to my desk and says, well I guess you can hurt your back doing mundane things.

He was out in his backyard and bent down to pick up his garden tools and fucked up his back. It hurt so bad he had to crawl back to his house whispering for help as breathing hurt.

We had a good laugh but yeah shit happens to all of us.

The key to calling in sick when not being sick is to show up to work when sick, and ‘tough it out’. That way, when you DO call in, no one can question you, because that must mean you must be REALLY sick.

Don't go to work sick. Tell you boss you're sick and ready to work when you're outside but dont go in the building sick. Edit: you aren't sick (you think its samosas) but you could be it's going around

Jotunn7 t1_j0iagws wrote

Dude, if you're sick, call in sick.

Sure people lie about it, but its also a situation where someone could have caught food poisoning or a cold could have gone from "eh, stuffy nose" to "I'm vomiting and feeble". In either case, letting the person take the day off helps ensure it won't repeat again the next day. After all, if they are indeed sick and come in, now they're recovery is impeded and they may be sick longer, plus they probably were borderline useless that day anyway. If it does repeat to the point where its a serious issue, then they can be asked to get a doctor's note. That indicates whether its a chronic issue that needs accommodated, or if they've been lying they'll be in the next day.

Having been in retail before, I absolutely get being pissed that someone's called in sick *again*. It means more work for the people who are there, and it can't be scheduled or planned for. Even so, the real issue is always that whoever has been doing the scheduling and hiring is putting y'all on a skeleton screw staff. One person being absent should never be crippling to everyone else. If it is, then either someone else needs hired who can perform their tasks as well, or there's flat-out too little manpower available at the job to deal with unexpected events. Either one is a failure of the business/manager/scheduler not a failure of the absent person.

I wake up 1.25 hours before work with a migraine sometimes. These are so bad I sometimes have to get my partner to text that I'm sick since I can't open my eyes without feeling like I'm getting hit in the head with a thick textbook, and have trouble going to the bathroom ,forget working, but luckily I vomit enough for 3 days so I barely have to go to the bathroom anyway due to dehydration and not keeping food (or pain meds) down. I would much rather just go be bored at work because hell is what I described, and I've just decided to go to the hospital a few times because I was still in constant unwavering pain 2 days in. So let's just say I'm feeling some schaudenfreude here, no offense OP but hopefully you'll be more understanding in the future bc you were kinda asking for this in a karmic sense.
