This actually did happen less than 12 hours ago. I (M30) got home from work and was feeling a little lonely as my wife and I recently separated so I went on Omegle. Came across a reasonably cute girl and we chatted for a minute, she asked to take it to text so I agreed, she sends me a head shot I do the same, she pumps me up, says I’m cute and whatnot then sends me a nude and asks for the same. Now mind you I’m not the best looking, I’d say average so her gassing me up really felt great in my current state. Anyway, she tells me how sexy I am and that I should go to her IG and pick out my favorite pic so I go and request her and after about 5 minutes later “they” come back with screenshots of messages to all most closest friends and family on IG demanding $500 or they’ll send my nudes out, now not only do I not have the money but I know how this works, I send the money, they ask for more then ends up sending the nudes anyway so I just block them on everything and hope for the best. Nope. They freaking did, they sent my nudes to at least 6 people and that’s all I know of, my sister, my coworker, my friends wife. I’m mortified, how could I be so dumb.

TL;DR I got scammed and humiliated after sending nudes to a stranger

Tell all your friends to send nudes back to this person to establish dominance.

its wild the things people will do with the scams / identity theft / robbing stores in broad daylight.. all instead of just trying to actually get a job

Well to be fair this is such a easy scam to do with how horny dudes are on the internet…. Like it’s actually a good income with super low risk lmao

You're supposed to send face pics and nudes of other people.

Here in the UK that's illegal, not sure about where you are?

Pretty sure blackmailing is illegal almost everywhere

Pretty sure he is talking about the distributing nudes without consent, which is illegal in the UK

I mean, the scammer isn’t exactly trying to stay on the right side of the law in the first place.

Xeni966 t1_j6630ip wrote

To be fair, these people are hard to track and usually live in other countries so they probably can't be caught or brought to justice

Did all your friends say "Ha! Look! I got a nude pic! That must mean he tried to get laid and got scammed! OP is a degenerate! Get him fired from everything!" If they are smart and care about you, they would say "at least you didn't lose your $500".

wyldstalyn6 OP t1_j63ruvh wrote

Nobody has mentioned anything except my sister who was livid that some scum bag is doing this

I mean at least she heard you out. I'm sure if anyone got a nude of you from a rando account they'll know something is up since this is such a common scam. This happened to me a while ago. I gave them $20 when they asked for 200. They still threatened to send them but they didn't, because I woke up the next day and saw the facebook page they were using was now a completely different dude. I wish these scumbags would burn

CanNeverRememberDis t1_j63ghbi wrote

This is a fairly common scam. Don't beat yourself, as you are far from the first or last to be a victim.

Once you send those pics, it's on the scammer as to whether they actually share them or not. The fact they sent them just speaks volumes of what a shit person they really are.

Measurement-Shoddy t1_j6326rh wrote

You should notify the police of what happened and see if there is anything they can do...yes the damage has been done by then sending the photos to your contacts, but these people need stopping before they move on to the next victim

Reelplayer t1_j63f3yq wrote

A good police officer is one who would wait to start laughing until after they hung up on you. There is nothing they will do for something as petty as this.

Flossthief t1_j64c254 wrote

This happened to my cousin

He's so shameless he just said "yeah so?" And the scammer had no idea what to do

Have no shame and she holds no power

Oh man, that sucks. Try not to be too hard on yourself though, no doubt you were feeling vulnerable and yeah - everyone loves a bit of positive attention. You’re human. Clean up your socials privacy settings, ready yourself and your ego for some awkward conversations, and try to remember this too shall pass. Try to stay circumspect and it won’t be long before you’re telling the story as a cautionary tale to some friends.

I imagine it's been a while... Sexting that is.

Just remember:

  1. No exchange of social media that is tied to family or friends. You know... "burn accounts."
  2. No identifying features in photos especially with strangers.
  3. Scammers prey on the lonely or gullible. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
  4. Keep your intentions clear with yourself. If you are going for fun with a stranger, make extra steps to protect yourself or identity. If you're going for a relationship, take your time to get to know them first... Preferably in public spaces.

Note to self, don't sext someone you haven't met or haven't talked to by voice to for a long while.

Regarding the embarrassment reaction: if some rando sent me nudes of my friends or family out of blue I'd just report them. "Well yeah that's my brother's junk, did you need confirmation or something?".

This won't fit every context but hey, a lot of the people who could get it might not freak out and need a pastor afterwards.

By you going to their insta and following or commenting on of their pictures. They go to your insta account and contact your friends and family via insta... I'm guessing, seems the only way I can think of that happening

I wonder if this works with my current man of 9 years. I wouldn't really send his nudes to anyone but I could use $500.

That sucks OP. Tough break. This is why I encourage everyone, male and female, to be selective with who they show their body to. You never know what you're dealing with, especially online or over the phone.

2

witchnyc8537 t1_j6882wh wrote

Fwiw if I got nudes randomly from someone I cared about who got scammed I wouldn’t say anything and wouldn’t judge them and would be mad at the scammer for also invading my privacy and would just put it in the vault and not think about it much beyond “oh that sux don’t give them money for your nudes.”

Ten years ago this was truly life ruining and for some people it still can be (teachers). But it happens more and more now so most people are over the shock value.

This scam is particularly odious and to my mind not too far away from committing multiple sexual assaults (you and everyone they hit with your pictures unsolicited)

While embarrassing, you’re 30 years old - nobody really cares about that shit unless they’re super religious or 14 years old.

Of course, family will tease you until you die, but that’s because you’re taking it too seriously.

And - most importantly - you’ve got a great story to tell at parties. Seriously.

It's 2023 and things like this are common, . Most people will react like this, possibly with a 'he should have known better though' thrown in but that's not that bad to deal with.

Expected fallout is some awkward jokes, some support and no real negative effects, so I wouldn't beat yourself up (or off) about it.
