This dude was bizarre to say the least, he even sought out mental health treatment in Spain because he knew he was insane. Executing 189 people wearing a Santa costume is one of the more sane things he did

Almost as bad as beating 8 people to death with a steel dildo while being dressed as Bugs Bunny.

I think it’s his best special

He openly asked for help and people not only ignored him they kept listening to him?!?! I mean I see the people in government who I know are bat shit insane but at least they pretend not to be.

WholeSilent8317 t1_jacputi wrote

he did not openly ask for help. he secretly sought treatment in a country other than his own.

5

Mick_86 t1_jadak3j wrote

It was obviously a trick. A bogus cry for help. Anyone taking it seriously was in line for some bizarre execution, guillotine by razor blade or something.

"On Christmas Eve 1969, he had 186 suspected dissidents executed in the national football stadium in Malabo with the executioners dressed as Santa Claus. While the executions were going on, amplifiers played Mary Hopkin's song "Those Were the Days". 150 were shot or hanged with the remaining 36 being ordered to dig ditches in which they were buried up to their necks and eaten alive by red ants over the next few days."

Thats some fucked up stuff!

Equatorial Guinea, for those of you who were curious.

That country that had a brutal and murderous dictator for 11 years, then removed him from power, executed him and replaced him with his nephew - who's been a brutal and murderous dictator for 44 years now. Cool beans.

Was this plan put together by Dennis Hoppers' character from Blue Velvet?

22

in-game_sext t1_jabrtjs wrote

Dennis Hopper actually got drunk and invited a bunch of people to a speedway and sat in a chair while everyone watched and lit dynamite beneath it, it exploded and he survived. There is actually video of it. Another weirdly tangential stadium story for you.

That was an amazing watch! On an unrelated note, but it reminded me of Kiefer Shuterland jumping in a Christmas tree.

I bet those executioners had flashbacks every time they heard that song

15

Djbonononos t1_jab0ipc wrote

Not defending this guy, but there actually isn't a lot of evidence for the part about the executioners being dressed as Santas.

Public executions were a real thing under Nguema, and he did have over a hundred executed on Christmas Eve 1969, but the Santa suits is something I need to see actual fact-checked information on.

Of the two sources cited on Wikipedia for this awful event, one mentions the Santa costume thing as likely unfounded. The other makes no mention of Santa costumes.
