I always thought +/- meant within a range, so if something was +/- 2mm of 4mm it would be from 2mm - 6mm.

I know that's not the point of what you're saying but I learnt something new today too.

That's the typical usage of +/-. I've never seen it used as "approximately". Instead, I'd use "~", eg "~45k years ago".

+/- as used in the title was pretty confusing to me
