I think you mean states of matter....

I was reading that line oh yeah?! President, Supreme Court, & The House. (Which is also wrong 😂)

Some of those are states of states. It's difficult to pigeon-hole states of matter, since states of matter aren't actually a physical thing by themselves.

Do we want to consider glass to be a different state of matter than metal? It should be: Metals are not remotely similar to glasses. In bulk properties they have rigid bodies, but that's about it. They're both "solid" and yet what meaning does this have? Mercury is far more similar to iron than either are to sulphur. Why should we consider the bulk property of rigidity or fluidity to be more important than, say, conductivity or first ionisation enthalpy?

Ultimately, it's best to restrict "states of matter" to everyday experience, as that's what they're meant to be.

Yeah, some of those, you have to ask, what are we calling a state of matter now? Superconductivity? It's a physical property. That's like saying hot and cold are states of matter. This is giving me "there are 27 different genders" vibes.

I mean, not to beat the gender horse, but there’s definitely more than two. I’m just exhausted of all the made up shit so people feel special about their own particular label. Clown self? Wolf person? Fuck right off.

Bruce-7891 t1_jegfrdq wrote

Agreed, after awhile it’s like, what are we even talking about anymore?

It’s the outrage that kills me. How am I supposed to guess you identify with clowns? If you truly identify with some obscure label, foster understanding, but don’t post cringe videos on TikTok about how people are purposefully mislabeling.

But also like yeah man, when my professor told me there are as many genders as there are people, he didn’t mean this. He meant people have different ideas of masculinity and femininity, on a spectrum, not that people would suddenly decide they identify their gender with the random fucking non-human things.

I identify as a human, not a baseball. I am male, but I think cars and sports are gay.

I’m also completely stoned right now.

IIRC glass is actually closer to a liquid with an extremely high viscosity. It will pool, but the universe may end before that happens.

This song caused my then 6 year old to loudly complain to her teacher that the reading book she'd brought home from school was wrong. The book had tried to convince her the sun was made of gas and, thanks to They Might Be Giants, she knew that was wrong and was furious that school had lied to her.

Plasma is significantly more common, universally than the other 3 mentioned.

TIL "time crystals" is a state of matter.

Aren't the conditions that allow for liquid water more extreme than those that allow solid or gas? Such a small window of temperatures that makes it liquid.

Non-Newtonian fluids like cornstarch and water are heckin' fun to play with.

It's shit like this that makes me realize they only taught us not even half the information in high school.

Skips3000 t1_jeffeb6 wrote

Lol, you want them do teach the entirety of everything in high school? High schoolers don’t need to know all 23 states of matter. There is high learning for this kind of stuff.

bothunter t1_jefozfx wrote

I wouldn't expect people to know all the states of matter, but it's kind of sad that a lot of people don't realize there are more than three, and plasma is one of them. (and experiments involving plasma are fun as hell)
