As a character in one of his novels, Grip is believed to have inspired Poe's famous poem, and is on display in a Philadelphia public library by jableshables

I've wondered this myself, as apparently it was a big problem back in the day that unattended children would just munch on paint chips and get lead poisoning.

Lead is sweet tasting, paint is attractive looking.
