Sure- but a lot of those 1599 are so close to others, that it's a bit disingenuous. It would be like saying USA has 4 languages- "regular" American English, Southern drawl English, Cajun, New England English, etc.

I think the major languages are only around 30-40.. but the tribal population does have a huge variety of languages. Most of them don't even have a script.
