In Japan they were introduced in the 1970s after idiots bought them as pets because of a popular anime (Rascal). They’ve now spread to every prefecture and are pushing out native species like tanuki. There’s an active trap and destroy order for them throughout the country.

Raccoons are so adaptable too, they would easily out compete many local species around the world

Tanooki Mario is a tanuki, which are animals native to Japan which look very similar to raccoons. In English, they are even called "raccoon dogs".

In germany, they are descended from four raccoons set free to enrich the local fauna in 1934 and various fur farm escapees.
