I guess the animals didn’t like being filled with helium.

Back when it started in 1926, the parade route was six and a half miles long! That's a full on hike.

They eventually pared it down to two and a half miles.

You know......they had clowns to clean up all the animal poo at the end of the parade but the clown union got into an uproar because one of their members slipped and fell into a giant pile of elephant dung where he suffocated and died. When he fell he was kicking and thrashing about and everybody was laughing because the thought he was......clowning around.
So then they said, "so, you don't like dung? Well then, what do you think about BALLOONS?" So of course, the clown union was enthused.

The helium used for balloons is a byproduct of the helium refined for medical and scientific uses. It's not the same stuff.

It's literally of a quality that cannot be used for scientific or medical uses, nor can be refined further. You do realize that gases come in different qualities defined by standards, right?

I bet the live animals killed fewer people than the balloons have

Yeah, sucks when they forget to feed the lions and they break loose.
