The Thing was such a good movie. Some of the best special affects I've ever seen. I'll admit I even enjoyed the sequel.

The vast majority of sequences in the original The Thing were practical effects e.g. Puppetry, which is why I think it holds up so well. I absolutely agree on both points

I hadn't watched either up until recently, so I watched them in movie chronological order, new one first, old one second. I liked them both, thought they were both great movies. Did I miss something?

Practical effects are just amazing and underutilized it doesn't matter how much you spend on CGI it's always just spacejam levels of contrast

The practical effects are virtually unrecognizable because of the CGI they over-layed (2011 film). I just recently watched the DVD’s special features and they showed a bunch of behind the scenes stuff. I couldn’t believe there were any practical effects at all by the way the butchered them with CGI
