I thought it was antidisestablishmentarianism

Medical/scientific terms shouldn’t count.

SeraxOfTolos t1_j2cuyhc wrote

It actually is, the definition of phenom-xxxxxx is a fake word made up to become the longest word in the dictionary, it's since been taken over to mean a type of lung cancer cause by volcanic ash

SithRose t1_j2cy08l wrote

I mean, it's pretty literally the meaning of the German style Latin root compound word anyhow...

Thought it was 'smiles' because there's a mile between the first and last letter ...

what about HAUL which has an AU between the first and the last letter?

Get out of here with your freedom units - everyone knows there is a kilometer between the first and last letter.

ElfMage83 t1_j2dfwrj wrote

Kilometers are shorter than miles, which you'd know if you learned both systems like Americans do.

Besides, the modern mile is based on the ancient Roman mile (mille passus, where each pace is ~30 inches), far older than either metric or US customary length. A modern mile is roughly twice as long as a Roman mile.

"is a made up word [...] It has sometimes been used as a synonym for the occupational disease known as silicosis, but it should not be as most silicosis is not related to mining of volcanic dusts, and no evidence of silicosis has been found in populations exposed to crystalline silica in volcanic ash.

Clinical and toxicological research conducted on volcanic crystalline silica has found little to no evidence of its ability to cause silicosis/pneumoconiosis-like diseases and geochemical anlayses have shown that there are inherent factors in the crystalline structure which may render volcanic crystalline silica much less pathogenic than some other forms of crystalline silica." All words are made up. If a reputable dictionary has added it to their book, then it's an official word, regardless of how it got there.

Vlacas12 t1_j2dis9u wrote

It was especially made up for that reason, to be the longest word in the English language, and the use OP stated in the title is very much criticized by the scientific community. I am mostly criticizing OP's clickbait title, not the word itself.

I knew this, actually. It also contains 45 letters.

Hattix t1_j2ddgar wrote

The word was invented in 1935 by Everett M. Smith, president of the American National Puzzler's League, a crossword society. Members of the NPL campaigned for it to be included in popular dictionaries.

Oxford defines it as "an artificial word". The condition is actually just called "silicosis", which is a type of pneumoconiosis.

CranstonBickle t1_j2e70vw wrote

Can't remember which game show it was in the UK, but the objective was you were given three letters and had to come up with the longest word including them in the order they were given.

This word was used almost weekly as anyone who appeared cottoned on to it pretty quick

herbw t1_j2e8emc wrote

& the reason we docs do not put such a word on the charts is because of Writer's cramp if any should. That word is simply NOT used.
