Edit: Whoa there armchair breadtubers! Can't someone enjoy the irony here? Isn't that half the fun of history, if we are honest? Smoke a bowl and fidget spin a minute; I'm not rooting for the Nazi's.

His mother was able to make it to the U.S. none of her family survived.

Yea but most of us not only don't have that kind of money but couldn't even get that amount in a loan.

If I sold everything I had maxed out my credit cards and made applications for a few more I doubt I'd have 100k.

In Ukraine it is the same. People need money to buy safe passage across the border unless they have EU passports for example and the police is checking up men during night time, well sorta curfew. Problem is border control won't let them out of the country if they are eligible for service in the front lines. I don't judge I just find it quite tragic.

There is a great History Unplugged podcast episode about Freud and the Nazis. I highly recommend it. Here it is

It goes to show you how lucky Freud was to escape. It was ultimately his friends and family that saved him.

They fucking pain me. My family hasn’t recovered in the decades since. We are small in number. Why can’t I visit a distant cousin in Poland? Oh wait, their would-be great grandparents/grandparents were all fucking murdered… thank god my direct ancestors decided the pogroms were enough and came to the US.

DefenestrationPraha t1_j1qdrnv wrote

It was even worse than that. Some of the Jews settled in Germany were citizens of other countries (Poland, Lithuania etc.), which were nevertheless anti-Semitic enough to either deny them passports outright or at least tarry when issuing them. So even if you wanted to move out of Germany, you would lack the necessary papers to cross the border.

During the biggest crisis of this type, Poland refused to accept many thousands of its own citizens expelled by Germany, who were forced to stay in no-man's land at the border for months.

Countries are notoriously reticent about refugees. The US viewed refugees as security risk’s and turned away Jewish refugees routinely. The most infamous was the German Liner St Louis with 900 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Ultimately they were refused asylum in America and Canada and returned to Europe where Britain, France, and other countries gave them asylum. Unfortunately 254 died in the Holocaust.

A lot of Country didn't want Jewish people. Even the US had quotas. " In 1938, more than 300,000 Germans —mostly Jewish refugees —had applied for U.S. visas (entry permits). A little over 20,000 applications were approved." Source

They have way less state-invested authority for sure. Not no authority (their buddies in police forces frequently let them get away with or condone shit like the intimidation and violence which the proud boys frequently engage in). The could develop into full blown deputized brown shirts pretty easily and quickly. But most branches of law enforcement in the u.s. and Canada already have secret police, and given the key part that police have played and are playing in the current fascist upsurge, I doubt they would require or allow the Proud Boys to encroach on their turf by becoming like the Gestapo.

More to this story.

Anna Freud was Secretary to the International Psychoanalytical Association -- a professional association for psychoanalysts that's still operating today.

The Gestapo interrogated her for 12-hours about this association, because they believed psychoanalysis was part of a Jewish conspiracy.

They didn't know that Anna was ready to commit suicide using Barbital had the Gestapo tortured or imprisoned her, rather than compromising others. Anna and her brother Martin had secretly obtained the Barbital from their family physician, Dr. Max Schur.

Sigmund Freud, fearing the worst, broke down after Anna was released. He went to the British consulate and requested passage for 16 members of his family and close friends -- including Dr. Schur.

They were all able to escape to London in 1938, but the story doesn't end there.

Sigmund Freud was suffering from cancer and within months of escaping the Nazis, his condition deteriorated sharply.

In severe pain with no hope for recovery, he went to Dr. Schur to end it all. With Anna's consent, Max Shur administered high doses of morphine. Sigmund Freud passed away a short time later, in September 1939, from the euthanasia.

That’s why religion shouldn’t be mixing with politics.

The Catholic Church dominated part of the Country and they did horrors to “save” people. They also did terrible things to French Canadian orphans. Putting some children with for exemple, only a stutter into Asylums, not giving them any education or good care, just because the Government was given them more money for taking care of them.

The others were on the same type of orphanage as the natives. Physical abuse, starvation, sexual abuse… all in the name of God.

My Uncle was in one of these orphanage and they were practically starved. And lots of them were sexually abused by these monsters. He said to me that he was lucky to be an ugly child. (He got 20K as an apology)

When I see what the religious right is doing in the US about abortion, I’m terrified to what will became of all those unwanted children. (Because we all know that rich people will continue to have abortions)

They won’t all get adopted that’s for sure. Will we see those huge Orphanage come back?

If you talk to those people missing their families from other wars and genocides, you will generally find that they too miss their families. The reason you’re “constantly” hearing about this one is because it had so many fucking casualties so recently that people are, in fact…still missing their families.

Anna herself would later go on to follow her in her father’s footsteps and become a psychologist in psychoanalytic theory. She developed a lot of techniques to treat children.

Waiting until 1938 to leave was probably a lot more expensive than leaving in, say, 1933. It didn't cost $300K to travel abroad back then. It probably involved smuggling and/or bribery, and may have been determined based on his ability to pay. It says in the article friends were urging him to leave earlier and he didn't heed them until it was almost too late.

IIRC Germany tried taxing (well, seizing the property of) fleeing rich Jews to fund the deportation of poorer Jews. This isn't an attempt at whitewashing Nazi Germany, it was the most practical solution at the time for getting rid of the most Jews. However so few countries accepted them, or rather many countries that did were soon to be invaded and annexed anyway, that..."evacuation" to the East was the second solution, followed by...well. We all know what they picked next...
