His trousers caught in his chair mechanism and while trying to free himself he tripped and knocked himself unconscious. The ship grounded on rocks while he was out and later broke up by YalsonKSA

The rest could well still be true, but I'd be highly surprised if this wasn't part of the real story, yes. Drunk bridge crew seem to be a frighteningly common issue.
