Tomb raiding stems from grave robbing, just with an extra layer of historical research and luck. It’s been a huge problem in China and also Egypt throughout the years. Partly because of poverty but also driven by the entertainment industry and the antiques market/black market.

The irony is Cao Cao was famous for tomb raiding. He even created a whole government agency to raid tombs, which would fund his troops.

I mean, accurate. To the point the Sima family deposed the Cao family and started the Jin dynasty, right? Who says you don’t learn anything from video games. I spent hours combing through the encyclopedia of Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the three kingdoms.

Oh the irony of Cao Caos tomb being looted. He literally financed his wars by looting tombs.

This is what happens when you confiscate and don't compensate the land owners for ancient stuff found on their property. If your only choice is to lose your shit, or sell the stuff and bury the place, then you are going to pick the latter. If you incentivize people to report archaeological findings, then you are going to preserve them. The only country which seems to know this is the UK with the PAS which compensates people who find treasure the government wants. (The PAS and this argument has nothing to do with foreign looted artifacts, just to push back against some stupid fool who starts talking about irrelevant shit.)

I played Romance of the Three Kingdoms on NES and usually played as Cao Cao. I think I did a good job.

Hell I gave Lu Bu a horse to come join my side. That was kind, right?

He was a self serving imperialist who used a lot of Imperial Edicts (think Executive Orders) to get his way. He basically had the emperor hostage and used the throne to serve his own interests.

China would have been better off if he just won at the Red Cliffs. Liu Bei's dogmatic stand for legitimacy just cast China into so many more years of war. Cao Cao could have unified China and restored peace, but there was another century of pointless war afterwards. It was the Sima clan that won in the end anyways.

Ah yes something that definitely is only a big problem in China. It's definitely not a problem in other countries with rich and storied histories. Definitely not something the British did in their conquests around the world. Or the Spanish. Definitely not something done all over the middle east. Also definitely not something that has happened all over the US and Canada. Ignore all the ancient stuff in private collections all over the US and Europe surely that was all donated or acquired through proper channels. Also ignore museums all over England full of relics from other countries. Yep only the Chinese are looting nobody else!
