Before replacement. Depending on your level of confidence/hubris you can actually do self replacement for about $100, supposedly. But I'm seeing most people saying they got quotes for replacement around $300-400.
If you've paid $3695 for your body, and are otherwise satisfied, replacement is the way to go.

The shittiest shutter in the market still handles more than 100,000 shots, 5 years means 20,000 poses a year, more than 50 pics every single day. That's not what I'd consider "casual".
A casual photographer who takes maybe 100-200 pics per week can expect a few decades of service from a decent Nikon if they take good care of it.

Enough that it's usually not worth it in a body that's also taken the years of use.
It's been a hot decade, but I think it cost $300 for Nikon to do substantial repairs to one of mine. And I think replacement cost was in the $500 range. Typical I think is in the range of 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of replacement for the whole camera... and if you like the model you've been using you can usually get a "used" model that has a double digit shutter count for around that same price by the time you've worn one out.

As a professional real estate photographer, I do about 50k-75k actuations a year. I stopped doing 5-brackets a couple years ago, so it used to be more.

This is a garbage article by someone who can't do math.
My D600 is on year 11 and I take a lot of pictures. To take 30,000 pictures per year for 5 years straight though is not something a regular person would do. I've only taken that many while full time traveling for 6 months a year. Even with a new baby we didn't take that many. That's 82 pictures a day. Think about that. What could you possibly photograph 82 times day after day without it being for work or some serious change of scenery??

Ive been a working photographer for over 20 years and only had one shutter/mirror assembly ever go bad. it was on a canon 1ds mark II so it was a while ago, and it cost 300 bucks with a CPS discount.
I got an R3 back in early August of this year and I just checked I have just under 50 K shots on it. although thats a mirror less camera so, slightly different game.,

I have a Nikon D5300 that I got in 2014. 9 years later, it has 85,000 clicks. Still going strong.

Yeah. My SX30 is way older and going strong. So are my other two over 5. And yes I am published and have approx 4000 images saved after deleting probably 80% of what I shoot. Over 5 is normal. Have to sell a good number to justify replacing that frequently.

I do a lot of weather, urban, cityscape, and infrastructure photography for fun. When I'm storm chasing, I'll often take a few dozen photos over the course of a few minutes if I see something interesting (the last time I saw a tornado I took well over 100 photos of just that one event and it lasted barely 5 minutes). Similarly when I'm shooting urban landscapes or cityscapes I'll take multiple shots of the same scene for quality control. Depending on the occasion, it's not unusual for me to wind up with between 500 and 1500 shots from a singular 4-7 day trip, or around 100 or so on a day trip. Granted, day trips happens (usually) no more frequently than once a month and the longer trips maybe two or three times per year, so my actual daily average is somewhere in the realm of 5 to 10 and I still feel like I shoot way more than a lot of casual photographers.

10k a years seems beyond amateur. 30+ a day is more than dabbling

Yes, probably so. I've been semi pro for a few years, shooting bands for fun before that

Yeah I have taken incredible amounts or pictures traveling but this article is talking about casual photography. Full time traveling for 6 months straight seeing stuff like the Pyramids, Great Wall of China, and Wildebeest Migration lead to 30,000 pictures. Not casual stuff. I don't need 85 pictures carving the pumpkin or catching a small bass.

Does shutters also work with time lapse shots? Like, if a shutter handles 100k shots, this would be only 100 x time lapse shots with 1k frames.
notoyrobots t1_j4rzbqg wrote
No, because its the mechanical actuation of the shutter that matters - in a timed exposure its still only opening and closing once.
