I think this a joke/exaggeration the interviewer took as serious

The article gives the details, but he felt like they fired the last guy for playing too loud, so he'd play the keyboard turned off. He'd practice at home and slowly starting turning the keyboard up until he thought it balanced.

Yeah, I’m having a hard time with this seeing as that dude is a super talented musician.

Dollarist t1_j5udq42 wrote

To clarify, he’s not saying that he didn’t know how to play keyboards when he joined the band. He’s saying that the previous keyboardist was fired for being too intrusively loud, so he turned the volume of his keyboards all the way down and listened to the songs.

Then he went home and wrote tasteful, unobtrusive keyboard parts. Pretty smart, actually.

bkconn t1_j5tv3s6 wrote

I mean, if you read the article, the guy spells it out pretty clearly so there's not a lot of room for confusion.. hard to tell in text, but he seemed like he was being honest. The story being true is funny and crazy to believe lol

Kalrhin t1_j5v6pfm wrote

The title says "pretended to play keyboards" whereas his words are "made sure my keayboard was turned off". There is a BIG difference

Chubs441 t1_j5uh2k7 wrote

I mean the title makes it seem that he didn’t know how to play, which is a bit confusing

Reminds me of the formation of the punk band Crass. They knew a guy who wanted to be in a band but couldn’t play an instrument so he just Rand his hand up and down the neck of a guitar while strumming the string. Eventually he developed a style that made the band what it was.

thisismyname03 t1_j5vlv46 wrote

Didn’t think I’d see a comment about Crass on Reddit. Good lord I haven’t listened to them or Conflict in some time. Anarcho punk was great.

Minuted t1_j5w9mjn wrote

Someone mentioning Conflict on reddit, don't think I've ever seen them mentioned before.

Slaughter of Innocence was my top listened to song last year on Spotify. Message to Who was third.

Not even that into anarcho punk or punk itself these days, just learned of them a few years ago and was hooked.

thisismyname03 t1_j5wcpr5 wrote

I haven’t listened to them in a loooong time but this is really getting me excited about them hahah. I recommend Subhumans as well. Bit more of traditional punk but very similar.

More than thirty years ago, I was watching an interview with Ringo on TV and he boasted, “I’m the greatest drummer in the world.”

Alone in the room, I immediately shot back “You’re not even the greatest drummer in the Beatles.”

I have since heard that (admittedly fairly obvious) retort attributed to a dozen celebrities.

There is no other way to acquire info on a band that was active 60 years or so ago dude except from other people talking about it. Are you mentally disabled? You think I can just hop in a time machine and buzz back to the 60s to see for myself?

On all of them after 2001, admittedly, you can't always hear what he's using them to do, but it adds a really interesting texture

BernieEcclestoned t1_j5t6mvt wrote

I worked for Native Instruments at the time so it would have been Absynth, FM7 and Reaktor. Tried to give them to him to get some PR, but he wouldn't accept and paid full price iirc.

If they were used, it would have been on Amnesiac or Hail to the Thief I guess, but I'm never sure how much hardware vs software they use because they have loads on stage but also had PowerBooks running.. and Reaktor can reproduce pretty much anything if you know what you're doing.

65

Charlie_Im_Pregnant t1_j5ujl0s wrote

Reaktor is sick but after fiddling with it for 5 years I must admit I still have no idea what I'm doing. I just fire it up and mess around until I stumble upon a happy accident.

I think Greenwood’s attitude was that he wasn’t up to his standards of knowing how to play… which from my listening over the years is damned near perfection seeking. His version of not knowing how to play is way different than 98% (random made up number) of the rest of us “not knowing how to play”.

78

wallabee_kingpin_ t1_j5xz6z2 wrote

Greenwood's reason is very clearly spelled out at the top of the article, and it's not what you've speculated here.

>“Thom [Yorke]’s band had a keyboard player — [whom] I think they didn’t get on with because he played his keyboard so loud,” he told NPR’s Terry Gross. “And so when I got the chance to play with them, the first thing I did was make sure my keyboard was turned off … I must have done months of rehearsals with them with this keyboard, and they didn’t know that I’d already turned it off.”

5

LostXL t1_j5v8dp7 wrote

Perfect example of a garbage misleading post title, it subtly tries to manipulate you into thinking someone didn’t know how to play, and that they tricked the band into thinking they were playing.

The other guy was too intrusive, this guy started with the volume low so he could get a feel for the music and slowly raised the volume. When he found the right volume the band said “oh this volume works it’s not intrusive”.

Two completely different stories, one wacky one benign. But at least you get some karma and people can click your username and go to your horrible 1 upvote posts selling stuff.

Choke on this downvote.
