It's all about being popular during the peak of cd sales.

Great music is no match for market trends

back in the 90's i remember bumping into a guy (i had another floyd shirt on. Ummagumma maybe?) and him showing me his darkside tattoo, and he was all pissed that people thought it was the then getting popular pride flag.

It had Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You" which was extremely popular (14 weeks at number 1 as a single) plus two other hits of hers on it. The movie was also the second highest-grossing movie of 1992. It isn't that random or surprising the soundtrack album sold very well.

Time is a very effective song to wake up to in the morning.

I mean it had:

-I Will Always Love You

-I Have Nothing

-Run To You

That's more great songs than many bands have made in their lifetime.

Imagine Whitney Houston singing The Great Gig in the Sky. That would really be something amazing

The thing about these best-selling lists is that they often are just US sales, and sales data prior to Soundscan is more of a guess. Another thing is that on some lists, double albums are counted as two copies, which is why many lists show The Wall as outselling Dark Side or the white album outselling Abbey Road. Plus of course since we reached the streaming era, the whole notion of ranking titles by sales seems moot. And isn’t Eagles Greatest Vol 1 the top-selling album of all time in the US now? It’s possible nobody really knows because again, sales numbers prior to the 90s were usually only an estimate.

Sad comment on the sorry state of modern civilisation...

"Modern civilization" meaning... 1992, when The Bodyguard came out? 1973, when DSotM came out?

Why does it matter that one extremely successful pop album sold a little more than another? It's not like Pink Floyd toiled in obscurity. What's wrong with Whitney Houston? She was an incredibly gifted singer.
