Hi Vermonters!

I’m looking to rent a cabin in your beautiful state this summer. I’m not the biggest fan of the airbnb model though - so I’ve been trying to find some kind of local agency, but everything I find through my Google searches seems to be somewhat similar to airbnb.

I figure there must be a “local” market for renting out cabins e.g. at ski resorts during off season? Or is the only possible way to go through airbnb, bookning.com, vrbo etc.?

vermontproperty.com is a good one-usually listings on there are only on there, not also on Vrbo or ABB

A lot of lake property is 3 season only so they're not meant to be occupied year round. Maybe look for listings calling the property 'camps'.

Bernie has a quaint little summer camp. It even has a guest house!

I know - but I brought an elephant last time and he didn’t react to that very well. Something about “when you work in a circus you don’t want to live in one” which I guess is fairly reasonable. Thanks for the tip though.

A lot is word of mouth honestly. We used to rent a camp on a lake in the NEK and my mom found it on the bulletin board at her work.

A lot of local people own the places that are on air bnb. You can contact hosts and ask them their story. If you are simply interested in supporting locals then this is an a option, even if it means air bnb getting a cut. Going through a local agency is just as likely to get you a place owned by an out of state landlord as it is a local.

This is a great idea! Whenever I book an Airbnb somewhere I try to find out if the owner is a local or at least lives in the state, I want to support the area I am visiting as much as I can. I booked a place on lake Seymour and the host was a native Vermonter, I said YES! immediately.

Have you checked out hipcamp.com, kind of like an airbnb, but for rustic cabins and might be able to book for longer period of time. Worth a shot.
