Vermont had more evergreens before 19th-century deforestation. Coat of arms design is from that time.

Here's an added part to that coat of arms. The tree that provided the model for the state seal was sliced up and distributed around the state. I don't know where all the pieces are, but I do know the Williamstown Historical Society has one.

The pines are the reason our mountains are green all year (unless snow covered).

The green stuff between the field and the mountains, there's your trees.

It be weirder if it were an actual coat you could wear and was made of arms.
Although I suppose that would fit the 2nd Amendment sentiment of most Vermonters...

The evergreen is a reference to the Green Mountain Boys, who wore a sprig of fir or hemlock in the band of their hats. It also represents perpetuity, continuing to uphold the values of freedom and unity.
