Hello, I’m moving to Ludlow, VT for the summer and work remotely. It’s seeming like the only high speed internet option at our house is Starlink. Any reviews? Thank you!

Starlink. Coming on 3 years now zero issues and blistering speeds. I work from home and game heavily with 4k Netflix in the other room. It’s a godsend.

I second this...Also, for what its worth, I just got an email from Spacex last week saying I was in a low demand area so my bill was going down $20 per month. Ping is around 35ms, download speeds consistently above 100mbps, lots of devices on and never have any issues. Heavy rain can slow speeds, but not to a point its noticeable, but does great with the worst of snow storms.

What's your ping speed? The last time I was on satellite I couldn't play games because response time was in the seconds instead of milliseconds. It sounds like that's not an issue for you.

It's around 34ms have had it almost a year. Don't game but lots of video calls and voice calls with no issues as all.

20-50ms. I don’t notice a hint of lag and play a ton of destiny 2.

That’s awesome. Do you have the standard hardware?

vermont4runner t1_jbetvzi wrote

Yes there is one hardware set. They update it periodically but it does the same thing.

Starlink is great as long as you can place the dish where it will have a completely clear view of the sky. You can download the app to check potential spots for the dish.

I do have a great spot with clear views. Thank you!

We use T-Mobile home internet and we've had good luck. We usually fall into up-speeds of 25-30mbps, which is pretty good. Both my wife and I work from home and regularly stream meetings at the same time with no issues. It's cheap and has been pretty reliable for the 2+ years we've been using it. T-Mobile has a service map where you can see if service is available for your address.

I've checked T-Mobile's coverage map for years. What area do you live in? The coverage map shows T-Mobile covers Vermont and most of Vermont says hell no! We had a guest get lost and in tears because the directions to our house were in texts to her T-Mobile phone which of course didn't work anywhere.

We live in the NEK, not very far from Newport. T-Mobile is the only cell service provider that has any coverage around our area, which is sort of a head-scratcher since the closest store is in Essex Junction. We were one of the first customers in VT to get home service and we feel pretty lucky with how it's worked out for us.

Do you know if you have T-Mobile 5G available? I ask because I know that for a bit T-Mobile would say that service was not available at an address if someone else had already subscribed in the area. Technically the service would be available, but they wouldn't provide it for fear it would potentially dilute their service.

About 4 months ago T-Mobile did a pretty big upgrade and they've been allowing new customers who had previously been denied for service. For example: My neighbor has asked not long after we got service and were told 'sorry'. Fast forward and they were able to get service a couple of months ago. Also, my service contact originally capped me at 50mb down. I just ran a test now and I'm pulling 138/34, which is pretty consistent to the speeds I get since the big update.

If you get even OK T-Mobile service in your area but you check your address in the service map and get a 'sorry about your luck', you might give them a call and see if there's a reason. I have no idea if T-Mobile is still trying to slow role their deployment, but if you haven't checked in a bit you might check again.

I’m also a happy T-Mobile home internet customer. I had Starlink and I find T-Mobile more reliable and faster for less than half the cost.

I have starlink. No issues at all. It’s very fast and hardly ever goes down. It doesn’t work in heavy rain but that’s about it.

Love Starlink and it’s super easy to run off the generator when the power is out.

Starlink has been decent for us. Certainly a billion times better than the crappy Consolidated connection we had before.

TDS or Starlink. You get to choose between craptastic fiber or the minimum milliseconds delay that comes with all satellite connectivity.

Average of 34ms. I get folks hate Elon but facts are facts.

TwoNewfies t1_jbf5tek wrote

Seriously. My husband won't consider Starlink (or a Tesla, even though we do have Tesla solar and batteries) since Elon's been putting his personality out there. I think he's using his Occupy Mars t-shirts for paint tags!

550km (starlink’s lowest altitude at perigee) is 0.00183 light seconds which is the absolute limit light (and radio) can travel in one second in a vacuum. Add in processing, heavy cloud cover, additional transmission, it not being in a vacuum, etc… etc… and there you go. Physics doesn’t hate anyone, even Musk.

I agree with the other guy, ping hovers around 35-45 ms and keeps getting more and more stable. Don't know what you're going on about. Obviously you've never tested Starlink.

Old school geosync satellite internet is 42,000km up. The difference is clear.

We currently have TDS at the house up there, and it’s terrible. They can’t meet the speeds my IT department requires for remote work

I’m in the sticks and Starlink is a life changer. No issues whatsoever!

Switched from consolidated communications to starlink. Such a huge upgrade haven’t looked back at all. Once in a while we have a hiccup during extreme ice or snow. But besides that we have been incredibly happy. Ours is $90 a month which is cheaper than consolidated. Unless you can get xfinity starlink is your best option

Thank you! Xfinity is not available where we are
