Yes! So you do need the learners permit but there’s no time in between that you have to wait to take the road test. What I do know is that you need your physical copy of the permit (the temp paper is not allowed) to take the road test. However, from what I know they bo longer print same day in the DMV, and I believe what you’ll be waiting for is for it to come in the mail.

Got it, thank you so much for this! That makes sense. So, just to make sure I have the order right on how this would go:

Taking the knowledge/written test (and passing it) would grant me my permit -> receive physical copy of the permit at some point in the mail -> after receiving physical permit, I can take the road test at any point, with no need to wait for anything else -> pass, receive license?

The only additional thing I'd mention here if the end goal is ASAP license to be sure to schedule the road test as soon as your permit is approved. It can be 3-4 weeks out to get a road test scheduled depending on which DMV you use. If I were scheduling for South Burlington right now the soonest is April 18th. It varies a bit and while awhile it was a LONG wait...seems a little less awful right now.

I had to do this back in 2007 when I immigrated to the us. After passing the test you get a temporary license printed on paper and then a few weeks later the real.deal arrives.

The paper one is valid and cops will accept it, but you'll need other id (ie passport)
